While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

New York Yankees Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.325 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 19.3% (Rank: 12)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.342 (Rank: 3) — Strikeout Rate: 18.5% (Rank: 8)
Pitchers per PA: 3.91 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Scherzer dominated the American League last season and he has dominated the National League this season. He’ll head back to an American League ballpark tonight, as the Nationals head to New York to take on the Yankees. Scherzer has one of the highest strikeout rates in baseball at close to 30% and he walks very few batters. The matchup against New York isn’t ideal, but we’ve seen Scherzer dominate similar opponents in the past. The only issue is his price. Corey Kluber is a much better option, as he draws a much better matchup tonight against the Mariners.
Pitcher Rating:84.3
Masahiro Tanaka (FD: $9400, DK: $10400)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 165.2 — SIERA: 2.71 — K%: 26.6% — BB%: 4.3% — FB Rate: 31.1% — HR/FB: 12.4%

Washington Nationals Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 22)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.286 (Rank: 24) — Strikeout Rate: 21.5% (Rank: 20)
Pitchers per PA: 3.76 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Tanaka was limited to 80 pitches in his first start back from the DL, but he made the most of them. He struck out nine batters in seven innings of work against the Mariners. The Yankees will likely stretch Tanaka out a bit further tonight, but he will likely be on a pitch count once again. Given the fact that he’s going to be limited in some capacity, he is not a great fantasy option against the Nationals. Run support is also an issue with Max Scherzer on the mound for the Nationals.
Pitcher Rating:88.2

Washington
NONE – This game has one of the lowest run totals on the board and for good reason. These are two of the best pitchers in baseball. Since the start of 2014, Masahiro Tanaka has held left and right-handed hitters under a .295 wOBA.
NY Yankees
NONE – As you can see from his statistics above, Scherzer has been dominant this season. Even though this game will be played under American League rules, he’s still one of the top pitching options on the board. He has held left and right-handed hitters under a .295 wOBA since the start of last season.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.288 (Rank: 22) — Strikeout Rate: 25.1% (Rank: 29)
Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: Red Sox fans have to be excited about their young southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez. In his first two major league starts, he has a 3.18 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.4%. He has shown good command and he has some electric stuff. I’d like to see another couple of starts before using him in cash games though. The Orioles are a very potent offense that typically hits well at home. Use Rodriguez as a tournament play tonight in Baltimore.

Miguel Gonzalez (FD: $7400, DK: $6900)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.307 (Rank: 15) — Strikeout Rate: 15.5% (Rank: 2)
Pitchers per PA: 3.98 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Gonzalez is a serviceable starter for the Orioles. He doesn’t have electric stuff and he has a below-average strikeout rate of 17.8% since the start of 2014. He has pitched well over the last month of play, but the Red Sox strike out at the lowest rate of any team against right-handed pitching this season. The Red Sox also average the 2nd-most pitches per plate appearance, which drives up opposing pitch counts.

Analysis: Ortiz is in the midst of a slump. While some may see his .220 wOBA over the last two weeks and immediately think to avoid him. I see his $2,500 price tag on FanDuel and see it as a great opportunity to buy low. Camden Yards is a hitter-friendly ballpark and Ortiz draws a favorable matchup against Miguel Gonzalez, who is a fly-ball pitcher with an above-average HR/FB rate.

Taylor Jungmann (FD: $5000, DK: $4000)
Pittsburgh Pirates Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 19.9% (Rank: 15)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.335 (Rank: 7) — Strikeout Rate: 20.1% (Rank: 13)
Pitchers per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: Jungmann will be making his major league debut tonight for the Brewers. He was a first-round pick that was once considered one of the Brewers’ top prospects, although he’s now projected as a back-end starter at best. He has posted very mediocre numbers in the minor leagues this season with 3.87 FIP and a K/9 of 8.2 in nine starts. Vegas loves the Pirates in this game and I’m on board. The red-hot Pirates should give Jungmann a nice welcoming party to the majors.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 20) — Strikeout Rate: 18.6% (Rank: 9)
Pitchers per PA: 3.75 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Liriano is the biggest favorite on the board tonight. That says just as much about the way he is pitching, as it does about the opposing pitcher, Taylor Jungmann. Liriano has been dominant over the last 30 days, posting a 2.49 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 31.1%. What may be most impressive is the fact that he has only walked 7.6% of the batters that he has faced during that stretch. Liriano is a viable alternative to Corey Kluber if you are looking to fade the chalk, as the Brewer are ranked 29th in wOBA (.267) and 26th in strikeout rate (23.3%) against left-handed pitching this season.

Milwaukee
NONE – As a team, the Brewers are ranked 29th in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. The Brewers have a lot of right-handed bats to throw at Francisco Liriano, but he has actually held righties to a .281 wOBA since the start of last season.

Analysis: The Pirates go as Andrew McCutchen goes. It’s no surprise that they started winning as soon as McCutchen started hitting. Over the last 14 days, he has a .421 wOBA with a .224 ISO. His price has come up across the industry, but he draws a terrific matchup against rookie Taylor Jungmann, who will be making his major league debut. Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.365 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 15.8% (Rank: 3)
Pitchers per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Haren is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy baseball, especially when he is pitching in home run-friendly ballparks. Since the start of 2014, Haren has a high fly-ball rate of 40.9% with an above-average HR/FB rate of 11.8%. That’s not a good combination, at least not for Haren. He gives up a lot of home runs and he draws one of the most difficult matchups on the board. The Blue Jays are ranked 3rd in wOBA (.329) and 13th in strikeout rate (19.7%) against right-handed pitching this season.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 14) — Strikeout Rate: 20.5% (Rank: 14)
Pitchers per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 25)
Analysis: If you look at Buehrle’s pitching statistics above, there should be one that stands out like a sore thumb. Since the start of last season, he has only struck out 13.0% of the batters that he has faced. That is one of the lowest strikeout rates of any qualified starter. In daily fantasy baseball, strikeouts are king when it comes to pitching. Avoid Buehrle tonight against the Marlins, who have the 2nd-highest wOBA (.339) against left-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: I mentioned in yesterday’s Grind Down that it was a good spot for Stanton to homer. He was facing a fly-ball pitcher in a hitter-friendly ballpark. Sure enough, he hit a home run and added a double to boot. Stanton is in play again tonight, as he has posted a .451 wOBA and a .342 ISO against left-handed pitching in the last two seasons. Stanton and the other right-handed hitters in the Marlins’ lineup are all in play tonight against Mark Buehrle.

Turns out, it was the manager that was thrown out. Bautista has been red hot over the last 14 days with a .543 wOBA and a .405 ISO. Analysis: After a slow start to the season, Lester has turned it around over the last month of play with a 3.43 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 22.1%. His price is appealing, but his matchup is one of the worst on the schedule tonight. He has to face the Tigers, who are ranked 3rd in wOBA (.335) against left-handed pitching. Lester also has to face the Tigers in Comerica Park, where Detroit is very good offensively. There are aces in better spots than Lester tonight.

Pitchers per PA: 4.01 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Sanchez has struggled in his last four starts, giving up a combined 20 earned runs. He still has an above-average strikeout rate that hovers around 21%, but he’s not in great form at the moment. His matchup against the Cubs is an interesting one. While the Cubs strike out at the highest rate of any team against right-handed pitching, they also average the most pitches per plate appearance. That means that Sanchez may pick up strikeouts quickly, but the Cubs will likely drive up his pitch count. The price is appealing, but I’m limiting my exposure to Sanchez to tournaments.
