MLB Player Props Today

Jung Hoo Lee UNDER 0.5 Strikeouts (+140), DraftKings

Jung Hoo Lee struck out in his first plate appearance (PA) yesterday, but bettors shouldn’t expect to see him do that often. During Spring Training, Lee struck out only 4 times in 40 PA. Since 2019, Lee has struck out in 7.6% of his PA or fewer each year in the KBO. Lee’s strikeout yesterday was simply a result of him guessing incorrectly with 2 strikes in the 1st inning. In 4 PA, he only had 1 swing-and-a-miss, and it came against reliever Yuki Matsui in the 7th inning.

Joe Musgrove struck out only 2 of the 17 batters he faced in his first start of the year against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he does have above-average strikeout ability against left-handed batters (LHB) — posting a 27.6 K% in 2023 and a 26.3 K% in 2022. The San Diego Padres also have a few high-quality arms in the bullpen capable of generating a strikeout.

Simply, this is a bet on Lee that has too much value, given the +140 price. Last year, Masataka Yoshida struck out in only 10 of his first 29 games in the MLB, and Lee has equally good bat-to-ball skills, if not better. We will live with the results here.

Cal Raleigh OVER 1.5 Total Bases (+145), FanDuel

Cal Raleigh is a much better hitter against right-handed pitching (RHP) than he is against LHP. In 2023, Raleigh had a .790 OPS, .240 ISO, and 119 wRC+ against RHP, compared to a .645 OPS, .158 ISO, and 79 wRC+ against LHP. Fortunately for him, he will get to face RHP Nick Pivetta on Friday evening. Pivetta was one of the better pitchers in baseball during the second half of last season, but he still ended the year with a 5.22 FIP and some home run issues against LHB. Raleigh doesn’t have a high batting average in these spots, but he has plenty of power potential, making it more worthwhile to play the 2+ total bases at plus money instead of drinking the juice on him to record a base hit.

Chas McCormick OVER 1.5 Total Bases (+150), FanDuel

Chas McCormick had only 1 total base for us on Opening Day, but we are running things back with him on Friday. Throughout his career, McCormick has been one of the better hitters in the league when facing southpaws. Last season was no different – he posted a .325 batting average, 1.008 OPS, and 177 wRC+ against left-handed pitching (LHP). Today, he gets to face Carlos Rodon, who struggled to a 5.67 FIP and 1.49 WHIP against RHB a season ago. At plus money, McCormick is a worthwhile risk in this spot.
