MLB Player Props Today
- Jordan Montgomery o4.5 Hits Allowed
- Martin Maldonado u0.5 Total Bases
- Justin Verlander More Than 5.0 Hits Allowed
Jordan Montgomery o4.5 Hits Allowed (-140), DraftKings
During the second half of the regular season, only the San Diego Padres had a higher OPS than the Houston Astros against left-handed pitching. No other team had a better ISO than the Astros during that stretch. Houston is a high-contact lineup that has a disciplined approach at the plate, making them dangerous regardless of who is opposing them on the bump. Jordan Montgomery has allowed at least five hits in each of his last five outings dating back to September. Manager Bruce Bochy is unlikely to rush into his bullpen to begin this series, meaning that Montgomery should have a long enough leash to hit the over in this spot.
Martin Maldonado u0.5 Total Bases (-140), Bet365
If not for Martin Maldonado being adored by the Houston pitching staff, it is likely that he would have been out of a job a long time ago. Since the beginning of the 2021 season, Maldonado owns a .183 batting average and has struck out in 31.5% of his plate appearances. Though he is better against southpaws than against right-handed pitching, he is still not someone who is responsible for shouldering any amount of offensive responsibility for the Astros. If he comes up with a runner on base, it is not out of the question that we see him lay down a bunt. This under has good value.
MLB DFS Pick’em
Justin Verlander More Than 5.0 Hits Allowed
Justin Verlander has a strong postseason resume for his career, but there are obvious signs that the Verlander of old will not be on the mound on Sunday night. After being reacquired by the Astros at the trade deadline this summer, Verlander posted a 3.31 ERA, 3.92 FIP, and 1.12 WHIP across 11 turns in the rotation. Compared to his 2022 numbers, Verlander posted pedestrian swing-and-miss numbers during that stretch, allowing more hard contact, more overall contact, and generating fewer whiffs due to a slight loss of fastball velocity. He is vulnerable in Game 1 against a strong Texas offensive attack.
