MLB Parlay Piece for July 18, 2023
- Jeimer Candelario 1+ Total Bases
- C.J. Abrams 2+ Total Bases
- Under 8.5
Jeimer Candelario 1+ Total Bases (-185)
Jameson Taillon has been extremely underwhelming against left-handed batters in 2023, posting a 7.77 FIP, 1.78 WHIP, and allowing a .293 opponent batting average across the platoon. Jeimer Candelario has been much more productive against right-handed pitching than against left-handed pitching, making this a prime spot for him to record at least one base knock. Though not considered an elite bat, Candelario owns an impressive .869 OPS and a 132 wRC+ against right-handed hurlers this season. Trust him to get the job done for us.
C.J. Abrams 2+ Total Bases (+100)
This season, C.J. Abrams has been much better against right-handed pitching than he has been against left-handed pitching. Facing righties, Abrams’ batting average is 70 points higher, his OPS is 131 points higher, and his wRC+ is 102. Abrams has also been on a tear of late, with a .383 batting average and a 1.027 OPS since July 1. In that stretch of action, Abrams has a 30.0% line drive rate, which means that he will be less adversely impacted by the wind tonight than many other hitters. His total bases are a worthwhile inclusion in this longshot parlay.
Under 8.5 (+125)
Tonight, the wind at Wrigley Field is forecasted to be blowing in from right-center field nearly 10 miles-per-hour. Wrigley Field is one of the oldest ballparks in the MLB, and its construction allows wind to play a major role in home games for the Chicago Cubs on a daily basis. In January 2007, Chris Constancio documented in The Hardball Times that “more than 23% of fly balls result in home runs when the wind is blowing strongly toward the ivy-covered outfield walls, but only 13% of fly balls result in home runs when the wind is blowing in from the outfield.” Even without elite starting pitching in this contest, the environmental factors give this game a good chance to go under the pre-game total.
