NFL DFS Duds Report: Reviewing Week 6

It didn’t go well for everyone in this week’s NFL slate. We need to look back on the duds of DFS after a slate of an otherwise eventful day in the NFL. We had great action on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo! for daily fantasy sports, but these players may have spoiled your fun. We’ll reflect on the DFS projections and ownership projections, and look for ways we could have avoided these low scoring plays for our DFS lineups. Using our ResultsDB tool, let’s take a look back at three of the very worst picks players made.

Today’s ResultsDB Low DFS Scorers From Last Week

Alexander Mattison

DraftKings Salary: $7,200
FanDuel Salary: $7,000
Yahoo Salary: $14
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 4
DraftKings Fantasy Ownership: 23.02%

Phew boy, I didn’t see this one coming. Alexander Mattison was by far Week 6’s biggest disappointment as the Vikings RB was only able to muster 30 total yards on 11 touches. Mattison profiled as one of the top plays of the week due to expected workload and a favorable matchup but Mattison saw his opportunity fall to the wayside thanks to three first-half interceptions from Kirk Cousins. A negative game script for Minnesota resulted in more playing time for pass-catching back Ameer Abdullah and less work for Mattison who profiles more as the every-down grinder. There’s an important lesson here that there is always some inherent risk in rostering a running back at high ownership that isn’t going to be on the field for nearly every snap regardless of the game script. However, Mattison’s Week 6 performance was clearly at the bottom of his range of outcomes and I still think he was a fine play that found himself in an unfortunate circumstance.

Jonnu Smith

DraftKings Salary: $5,200
FanDuel Salary: $5,800
Yahoo Salary: $21
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 2.3
DraftKings Ownership:14.81%

We can safely chalk Jonnu Smith Week 6 fantasy dud up to injury as the Titans TE was on the field for just 29-of-75 offensive snaps. Smith was forced out of Sunday’s game early with an ankle injury while backup TE Anthony Firkser absolutely feasted in his absence for an 8-113-1 line. I figured Smith’s “dud” was worth highlighting as it was clearly a case of bad luck as opposed to a bad process.

Mike Davis

DraftKings Salary: $7,000
FanDuel Salary: $7,500
Yahoo Salary: $23
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 12.5
DraftKings Ownership: 18.74%

Mike Davis somewhat salvaged his fantasy day with a 1-yard rushing TD in the fourth quarter but was still an overall disappointment totaling just 55-yards on 20 touches. Davis saw close to the overall workload we projected him for but saw a big drop off as a pass-catcher, catching just 2-of-3 targets for 3-yards. Prior to Week 6, Davis averaged 7.5 receptions per game from Week 2 through Week 5 which was a major boon for his fantasy output and his lack of volume in that area against the Bears kept him from topping 20 DK points for the fourth week in a row.
