This week’s edition of Sunday Night Football will feature Jared Goff and the Lions against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock from Arrowhead Stadium.

A quick look at the standings may lead bettors to think that the 4-1 SU Lions are vastly superior to the 2-3 SU Chiefs in this matchup, but there are reasons to think we may get a competitive game between these teams this evening. Detroit has already ruled out LT Taylor Decker and his backup, Giovanni Manu. Defensively, the Lions will be without CB D.J. Reed and CB Terrion Arnold. Starting safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are both questionable too.

Looking at the NFL Odds ahead of kickoff, the oddsmakers appear to be pricing these injuries into the line, with the Chiefs favored by 2.5 points as of this writing. The total for this game is set at over/under 52.5 points.

Best NFL Player Props for Lions vs. Chiefs

Here are my top player prop bets, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 PM ET on Sunday, October 12th:

Tyquan Thornton OVER 21.5 Receiving Yards (-115, BetMGM)

Thornton has seen his role reduced significantly since Xavier Worthy returned from injury, but he’s still being used in a unique way within the offense, which gives him potential value here. During the last two weeks with Worthy active, Thornton has been the team’s primary deep threat downfield, posting a team-high 20.7 aDOT. Only Worthy has more targets 20+ yards downfield for the Chiefs during the last two weeks.

Detroit’s defense has allowed the 8th-most completions of 20+ yards this season. Tonight, they will be without CB D.J. Reed and CB Terrion Arnold. Starting safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are listed as questionable.

It wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest to see Thornton and Patrick Mahomes connect on a deep ball on Sunday Night Football.

Kareem Hunt UNDER 8.5 Rushing Attempts (-140, BetMGM)

The strength of Detroit’s defense early in 2025 has been against the run. Through 5 weeks, they rank 5th in EPA/play and 7th in success rate against opposing ground attacks. Hunt had a good game against Jacksonville on Monday, carrying the ball 7 times for 49 yards. However, it’s clear that the team sees him more as a short-yardage weapon than as someone they want to prioritize between the 20s.

Isiah Pacheco has also been running better of late, averaging 4.5 yards per carry or better in 3 consecutive games. This could be a spot in which Kansas City looks to get Pacheco more involved at the expense of one or two touches for Hunt.

Jahmyr Gibbs UNDER 14.5 Rushing Attempts (-135, BetMGM)

In Week 6, Detroit will be playing a 3rd-string left tackle following the injuries to Taylor Decker and Giovanni Manu. The consequence is that Dan Skipper, undrafted in 2017 out of Arkansas, will earn the start on the blind side.

Going from one of the better run-blocking tackles in the league to one of the worst is extremely notable, especially against a Kansas City run defense that has been trending up in recent weeks.

If Detroit finds themselves facing a negative game script, that could also take a touch or two away from Gibbs.
