NFL Week 5 Betting Picks – Cardinals at Bengals -3, O/U 47

Rarely will you see a game this late in the season that features a total of 0 bet two teams. You will also rarely see even a hint excitement for a game like this, but here we are anticipating the Cardinals air raid. Even if it hasn’t had a ton of success, it makes even the worst matchups intriguing. It also doesn’t hurt that we get to find out which team is in the same tier as the Dolphins and Redskins.

The Bengals come off a game in which they were absolutely embarrassed on national TV. Cincinnati looked similar to a high school offense and defense on Monday Night Football. The Steelers were able to do whatever they wanted on the offensive end and made Andy Dalton look silly. Although the Bengals are winless this year, they have had one of the toughest schedules in the league so far. For Week 1, they played a playoff team in the Seahawks in one of the toughest stadiums in the league. Week 2, they played an undefeated 49ers team, and in Week 3 and 4, they faced two teams that may very well end up in the playoffs this season — I know where the Steelers are just 1-3, but they showed ingenuity that can compete in the AFC North. While the Bengals were destroyed by both the Steelers and the 49ers, they did keep things close against the Seahawks and the Bills on the road in both games. It’s worth noting they’ve only had one home game so far this year. The Bengals may be bad, but they aren’t nearly as bad as everyone thinks they are after Mondy night.

One of my favorite betting strategies is to look at NFL odds and trying to find spots where a team’s perceived value is much lower than it should be. There’s no better time to do that than after an embarrassing primetime performance. We have many different scenarios where this is applicable for the Bengals. If it weren’t for this game the Bengals would probably be a 5-point favorite in this matchup, but people overreact after primetime performances, which is why we are seeing 70%+ of the bets coming in on the Cardinals. The next spot misleading the public is the fact that they’ve played 3 games on the road this year. Home field advantage is big for any NFL team, so the fact that they are 0-4 and have looked as bad as they have is in part because of their schedule. Overall, the public’s view on the Bengals is much lower than it should be, and thus the betting line is lower than it should be. It could very well drop another half-point.

The Cardinals, much like the Bengals, have had a difficult schedule. They have played every game this season against teams who are either .500 or have a winning record, and every single one of them has a decent shot at making the playoffs. While the Cardinals are a fun offense to watch, they have struggled at times and will likely be in this game without 2 of their top 3 WR’s. They come into this game coming off two losses of at least 17 points and are playing their second overall road game of the season. Overall, this matchup is a get right spot for the Cardinals offense, but they may just be a little bit too shorthanded to get the job done.

My NFL Week 5 Betting Pick: Taking into account all things with this game, you really just have to figure out which one of these teams are really the better team. The Bengals line is set as an average one would be for a home favorite (-3), and in my opinion, the Bengals are clearly the better team right now (I may be alone here). Heavy volume is coming in on the Cardinals side of the ball, so I won’t be surprised if this line drops to -2.5. The line could stay where it is, but this is still a great bet regardless. The Cardinals should struggle to stop the Bengals offense and I can see the Bengals running away with this one. I love the Bengals to cover.
