NHL DFS Picks: DraftKings Expert Survey for Tuesday, December 31

Who is your favorite skater to spend up for in cash games?

Moneyball16: Jack Hughes
boggslite: Connor McDavid
Joda: Leon Draisaitl

What is your preferred tournament format (e.g. large-field, single-entry) to play on this slate? How do you plan to beat that field of opponents? What tactic or strategy will set you apart?

Moneyball16: Large-field GPPs – Normally on a 9-game slate, there is not a ton of leverage to be had playing skaters against the likely highest-owned goalie, but I think Filip Gustavsson is going to have abnormally high ownership, and I will be taking some shots on Nashville skaters against him. Gustavsson is not only mispriced as a solid favorite, with one of the lowest expected goals against at a $7,800 price, but he is also facing a Nashville team that has the lowest shooting percentage this season. One thing to look out for with this strategy is that the Preds are coming off a 3-0 loss last night and won’t have a morning skate today, and it won’t be shocking if they make changes to their lines. Luckily, it is one of the first games of the main slate, so you should have time to maneuver those lineups if there are changes.

boggslite: Large-field tournaments – While there is nice value from some of the mid-range stacks in good matchups, my initial focus will be to lean into the upside from the expensive stars like Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. There are plenty of decent punt options on defense, so I don’t plan on paying up for defense, and I don’t love the upside from the expensive goalies.

Joda: Large-field tournaments are my preferred format tonight. This is not one of my favorite slates, as the value options are thinner than usual. Nathan MacKinnon is $10,500 — his highest price of the season. Even Connor McDavid is $10,000, which could leave him overlooked, especially since Leon Draisaitl is $1,500 cheaper and has been every bit as good. Leon’s linemate Viktor Arvidsson is cheap too, which helps open up roster construction. I think playing more balanced teams instead of stars and scrubs in tournaments could pay off.

Who is your favorite play (when considering price, matchup, roster construction, etc.) on the board and why?
