While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy hockey there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, salaries, and more.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. Hockey is an extremely high variance sport. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Stackability Rating System (Offense):

Green : Friendly matchup at 5v5 and/or on the power play; multiple lines worth stacking
Yellow : Line specific matchup at 5v5 and/or friendly power play matchup
Orange : Stacking is best left for GPPs, secondary scoring units and/or power play in tough matchup
Red : Difficult 5v5 and/or power play matchup, stacking not advisable

Stackability Rating System (Goalies):

Green : Goalie has a plus draw and is playable in all formats
Yellow : There is risk at 5v5 or the penalty kill; iffy for cash games and better for GPPs
Orange : Realistic risk at 5v5 and the penalty kill; not advisable in cash games but viable in GPPs

Hurricanes Offensive Outlook

5v5 (adj): 62.76 CF/60 (4) | 54.42 CA/60 (29) | 2.45 xGF/60 (5) | 2.16 xGA/60 (22)

The Hurricanes are an up and down team these days. Though they have some favorable offensive metrics, the team doesn’t always play as good as they perhaps should. Finish isn’t always there, a recurring problem for the Canes for the past few seasons. They’re without their top scorer in Sebastian Aho, so the inconsistency could be present again.

They’re also running into a Penguins team that has found its form over the past few weeks. The Penguins had a mostly successful road trip to California, and they’ve been playing better defensively over the past month or so. In the 14 games they’ve played in the last month, they have the fifth lowest CA/60 at 5v5 (53.55) and have also been one of the better teams at limiting scoring chances against.

It helps them that Sidney Crosby is looking like his old self. He figures to see a fair amount of ice time against Jordan Staal, Teuvo Teravainen, and Elias Lindholm. It’s not a great spot for the top line but they are the best bet for a big night from a Hurricane line.

The second line of Victor Rask, Justin Williams, and Brock McGinn as well as the third line of Jeff Skinner, Derek Ryan, and Lee Stempniak will work against Pittsburgh middle six. The Skinner line looks interesting as they have some chemistry together, push play well, and Skinner’s shot volume is getting up there again. They should also mostly avoid the Malkin line at 5v5.

Hurricanes Special Teams Outlook
Carolina’s power play does not have a favorable matchup tonight as Pittsburgh’s penalty killers have been outstanding this year.
