2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic Picks and Predictions
Austin Eckroat – Best Odds +5500 (FanDuel)
While most content centers on Rickie Fowler, I decided to approach building my card with mid-range golfers and longshots. While I will not be shocked if anyone at the top of the board wins this event, I don’t feel comfortable allocating the necessary funds to one golfer and would instead bet a handful. For that reason, we start this week’s card with Austin Eckroat.
Likely a popular option in DFS circles, Eckroat comes into his sixth straight event in very good form. His close call at the Byron Nelson was the highlight of a strong run that continued at the Travelers last week with a 24th-place finish. He couldn’t get much going on Sunday but was in the mix again. The ball-striking has been very impressive and he has flashed a couple of strong putting performances. Last week, his 5.6 strokes gained on the green would go a long way this week on a similar surface.
At any rate, Eckroat seems to be a logical starting point for a likely cheap card.
Sepp Straka – Best Odds +5500 (Caesars)
Checking in second, a similarly-priced Sepp Straka has the irons dialed in ahead of Detroit.
Straka has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride since his first win on tour last season. He flashes form for a few events and then misses a couple of cuts. With his inconsistency, however, he is very consistent. Sepp gets off the tee and hits greens. The putter fails him, often, which is alarming ahead of a putting contest. That said, he has gained on the greens in four of his last five events — all made cuts.
Again, starting a card by avoiding the entire top range gives us the freedom to add a few more golfers we would otherwise not include. Sepp fits that bill.
Taylor Moore – Best Odds +6000 (PointsBet)
Taylor Moore is the third member of the team and likely my favorite bet of the week. While middling in most of our key stat categories, Moore excels at a few things that we really love to see at Detroit Golf Club.
Moore hits it a long away and should have no issue pulling plenty of wedges this week for approach shots into greens. If Moore can get hot with said wedges, he is a proficient putter. Over his last 24 rounds, Moore sits 12th in SG: Putting but 4th in Putting from 5-10 feet. Given the small size of these greens, most putts for birdie or maybe even par saves should come from this range.
If Moore can strike the ball well this week, he has the putter to go very, very low. At 70/1 (bet on Tuesday), we love this addition. Moore will also be this week’s one-and-done selection.
Adam Schenk – Best Odds +6600 (BetMGM)
We added Schenk to the betting card on Tuesday night after thinking we completed the betting card. Then, after starting at the 80/1 for long enough, the FOMO overwhelmed me and I fired the outright.
When you look at our key categories, Schenk doesn’t really impress anyone. His putting isn’t great. He is bang-average at everything else except on approach, where he rates out 13th in the field. So, why? He has missed back-to-back events with loaded fields after a 7th at The Memorial.
Schenk was runner-up at the Charles Schwab despite having the win in his clutches. An unfortunately bad tee shot on 18 that led to a left-handed punchout gone bad prevent Schenk from winning his first tournament. If not for that bad swing, Schenk would have completed what was a clinic in a weaker field.
This is a weaker field. He is 80-1. I rest my case.
Additional Outrights
Justin Suh +7000 – Suh is ranked 1st in putting over his last 24 rounds.
Davis Riley +10000 – Riley is 12th in Proximity from 100-125 yards. He is a birdie-making machine.
Adam Svensson +12500 – I cannot quit him.
Luke List +12500 – Why can’t you get better at putting, Luke?
Dylan Wu +15000 – Wu sits 5th in SG: Par 5 and 8th in BOB%. Not bad for 150/1.

While Denny McCarthy couldn’t bring us to the promised land, he cashed out our FRL bet posted on Twitter. The FRL was our third big hit over the past three weeks and just like that a bad golf season seems to be turning around. With this being a presumed birdie fest, I am just going to pile up some cheaper outrights and hope somebody breaks out.
I don’t think I will touch any live betting this weekend because these events tend to get out of hand, but I will post on Twitter.
