2024 Genesis Invitational: PGA Golf Betting Picks This Week

Article Image

This week, Joe Cistaro breaks down PGA golf betting tips for the 2024 Genesis Invitational.

Sahith Theegala let us down with a lackluster Sunday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. In fairness to Theegala, he couldn’t have received a worse weather draw for the week. That said, each week we seem to be getting closer and closer to breaking through with an outright victory. This week, the PGA Tour offers its third signature event of the season at Riviera Country Club — the Tiger Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational. Give our golf betting breakdown a read as we build another card for the star-studded event.

2024 Genesis Invitational: PGA Golf Betting Picks This Week

Key Statistics

Unless mentioned otherwise, all Strokes Gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR.

Ludvig Aberg +2000 (FanDuel)

As referenced in our betting breakdown, Aberg fits this course so well despite making his debut this season. An exceptional driver of the ball, Aberg could be the next in a line of talented OTT players to win this event.

Given our key stat categories, we won’t find many holes in Aberg’s game. He ranks sixth in SG: OTT and third in our proximity range. You’d think with such lofty numbers in ball-striking categories that Aberg might lack around the green or with the flatstick. The young talent ranks in the top 22 in both categories.

I think he makes plenty of sense as an outright option this week given his recent form and strong finishes in top-notch fields. As a one-and-done option, Aberg could be a little sneaky given the talent at the top of the odds board.

Wyndham Clark +4500 (bet365)

While preparing this week’s breakdown, the betting odds on Wyndham Clark jumped off of the page at me. What will Clark have to do to be placed amongst the elite?

With three massive victories over the last year, Clark has shown a capacity to excel amongst the stiffest competition. While his victory at Pebble Beach came after 54 holes, Clark shot a course-record 60 on Saturday to take the lead. Ahead of Ludvig Aberg by only one stroke, Clark was declared the winner. Clark followed up his victory with a strong showing in Phoenix in what ended up being a very unpredictably scheduled tournament due to terrible weather.

Clark excels on poa surfaces and has the short game to complement competent play from tee to green. He is locked in as an outright bet for this week on my card. I will also give him a long look for OAD because he should not garner much ownership given the names at the top of the board.

Will Zalatoris +6000 (PointsBet)

I think Will Zalatoris is going to get my money in every start going forward at this price. As he climbs back into competitive form after his return from injury, Zalatoris is not playing poorly.

In fact, Willy Z is performing quite well. At another familiar course, Zalatoris finished 13th at the Farmer’s — gaining across the board after putting together a very strong Sunday. Poa is also his best putting surface, and he has historically played very well in California. Zalatoris has three consecutive strong finishes at Riviera since becoming a professional. He finished fourth last season — gaining 10.2 strokes T2G.

His recent statistics won’t show it because he is getting everything back in gear. Still, I want to get ahead of Zalatoris being priced back in the 20s and even shorter at smaller events. I don’t think the risk is worth an OAD selection and would prefer to save the ball-striking savant for later in the season when he is in better health.

Sepp Straka +10000 (Caesar’s)

For our last slot on our outright card, we take a shot on an affordably-priced Sepp Straka. Straka tends to sneak up on us once in a while on tour and has played well at signature events of late.

He didn’t play well at Farmer’s but finished 26th or better in both signature events this season against the strongest competition. Despite sub-par recent form, Straka still ranks in the top 30 in this week’s field in SG: Approach, 7th in our key proximity distance, and 13th in putting. At 100-1, I have made worse outright bets.

We close with Sepp for a pittance and hope he gets hot at the right time.
