The Georgia Bulldogs are heading down to Jacksonville on Saturday to face the Florida Gators in a classic top 10 SEC matchup. The Bulldogs come into the game as a 6.5-point favorite over the higher ranked team. I find this interesting seeing that they struggled a bit in each of their last two games heading into their bye week. Here’s a look at the odds and college football picks for this highly anticipated matchup.

No one in Athens wants to admit it, but to this point it looks like Georgia made a mistake in letting Justin Fields walk away from the program and sticking with Jake from State Fromm. Fields, now at Ohio State, has proven to be much more dynamic from behind center. Fromm hasn’t been terrible, but he hasn’t been great either. He’s completing over 70% of his passes but he’s only thrown nine touchdowns. He’s struggled a bit in the downfield passing game and as a result the Bulldog offense has lacked explosiveness. In week 7, we saw Fromm struggle mightily in perhaps the worst game of his collegiate career against South Carolina. He only completed 55% of his passes and threw three interceptions compared to just one touchdown. His performance resulted in an embarrassing home loss to a Gamecocks group that came into the game with a 2-3 record. The following week featured a sloppy, heavy rain influenced game against Kentucky. It became a ground affair as neither team could get anything going in the passing game and the Bulldogs came away with a 21-0 victory. Safe to say the quarterback and the team as a whole has failed to live up to the lofty expectations set this season. Perhaps the bye week came at the perfect time for them to get their minds right.

On the other side, the Florida Gators may have exceeded expectations thus far. After losing their starting quarterback, backup Kyle Trask has stepped in and performed well. His numbers even look better than his counterpart this weekend as he’s thrown for 14 touchdowns and 1,391 yards this season. They too are coming off a bye week at the perfect time. They’ll be getting back their top two pass rushers, Jabri Zuniga and Jonathan Greenard, as well as wide receiver Kadarius Toney who has missed the last 6 games with an injury. Toney is said to be one of the more dynamic playmakers for the Gators on the offensive side of the ball while the two defensive stars bring an added dimension to their already stout defense.

Giving Florida 6.5 points in this matchup seems awfully generous to me. Just a week after South Carolina went between the hedges to take out Georgia, it was the Gators who came into their house and came away with an 11 point victory. Florida has a very impressive win against Auburn and competed for two and a half quarters against LSU who is now the #1 team in the country.

Georgia can’t say any of that. They’re best win is a 6-point triumph over a Notre Dame team that is overrated year in and year out and proved that once again last week getting throttled by an equally overrated Michigan team. On top of that, the Bulldogs lone loss is a terrible one while the Gators loss is respectable.

Week 10 College Football Picks — Georgia vs. Florida

To this point in the season, the Gators just look like the better team. I know Georgia is supposed to be the more talented. But they have failed to meet expectations thus far while the Gators are exceeding them. This may be the week Georgia turns it around, but I just don’t see it. They may win but not by much. Keep in mind, the Gators have been an underdog six times under head coach Dan Mullen. Florida came out ahead in four of those games. I’ll take the Gators +6.5 and I really like their chances to win the game outright.

The total is set at 44.5. Pretty low for a college football game but I still like the under. This is set up to be a battle of stout SEC defenses. Both teams have NFL talent on that side of the ball. Florida is giving up under 16 points per game this season while Georgia is only allowing 10.6 per game. Expect a classic SEC knockdown drag-out kind of game with a final score in the 23-20 range.

College Football Picks: Florida +6.5; Under 45.5
