2024 Wells Fargo Championship: PGA Golf Betting Picks This Week

Article Image

This week, Joe Cistaro breaks down PGA golf betting tips for The Wells Fargo Championship.

The PGA TOUR heads back to North Carolina one week before the second major of the season. The 2024 Wells Fargo Championship returns to Quail Hollow for another tough test for golf’s elite. Our betting preview looks over the course, the field, and relevant statistics.

Scottie Scheffler will not play, and Ludvig Aberg withdrew from the tournament on Monday with a knee issue. Rory McIlroy brings a course history to be admired as this week’s favorite. Will Rory hoist the trophy, or will we see some parody without Scottie in the field? Let’s go over this week’s betting card.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship Betting Picks

Key Statistics

Unless mentioned otherwise, all Strokes Gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 24 rounds on the PGA TOUR.

Sahith Theegala +3000 (BetRivers)

Prior to digging in on my Theegala wager, I want to mention my approach this week. Without Scottie Scheffler in the field and then with Ludvig Aberg withdrawing, I don’t feel very comfortable paying most of the sticker prices on the favorites. With that said, Rory McIlroy remains my favorite play of the week, and I will use him in DFS and as my one-and-done selection.

With that in mind, we open our card this week with Sahith Theegala. Theegala could keep an inferno going with the dollars I have lost betting him throughout the 2024 PGA TOUR season. I will not be discouraged. Sahith continues to knock on the door and brings a phenomenal skill set with him to Quail Hollow. Nails with the putter, Sahith does more than enough with his driver to threaten the top of the leaderboard over the course of any golf tournament.

We need Sahith to find fairways to help with his ranking with regard to P4: 450-500 yards. If he can keep everything under control on those very challenging holes, Sahith should score enough on the Par 5s to contend come Sunday.

We open up with a unit on Theegala at BetRivers.

Akshay Bhatia (FanDuel)

Speaking of good form, we add Akshay Bhatia as our second outright bet for the Wells Fargo Championship.

While Sahith struggles a bit in our key Par 4 range, Akshay ranks 5th in the field over his last 24 rounds. He ranks 5th in SG: Approach and 9th in SG: Par 5. If Bhatia finds a hot putter, he will be in the mix on Sunday.

Even in a strong field, 50-1 feels like a great price. Akshay makes for a very, very sneaky OAD play if you have him available and want to save the top of the board for the three remaining majors.

Stephan Jaeger +6000 (BetRivers)

Another week, another outright bet on Stephan Jaeger. Can you tell I am attempting to atone for missing him win earlier this season?

After a missed cut at the Masters, the beat went on with Jaeger bombs. He has back-to-back T20 finishes including an 18th place finish at the last signature event. Jaeger won’t need to “make a cut” this week but continues to remain in the picture through Sunday most weeks.

Jaeger ranks 5th OTT and inside the top twenty in both SG: Par 5 and P4: 450-500. Wells Fargo requires prowess off the tee box, and Jaeger will bring that in ample amounts. I think with a couple of key pieces not playing this week, I am more inclined to attack golfers with longer odds. We will spend a half unit on Jaeger.

Kurt Kitayama +8000 (BetMGM)

Finally, Kurt Kitayama makes up the back end of our card at 80-1 on BetMGM. Kitayama showed in 2023 that he can get the job done in big events. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational — outlasting Scottie Scheffler — and then finished 4th in the PGA Championship.

Kitayama ranks well in SG: OTT and Proximity 200+ yards. While putting can be a concern, Kitayama has the grit to surprise us in better fields. With four rounds at his disposal, he is a pretty good value at this price knowing he has multiple opportunities to go low.

He is on a “just-outside-of-the-top-thirty” run in his last few events. I think he is worth adding at a very modest price.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship Betting Card

Golfer Odds Units Payout
Sahith Theegala +3000 1 30
Akshay Bhatia +5000 0.6 30
Stephan Jaeger +6000 0.5 30
Kurt Kitayama +8000 0.4 32

One-and-Done Pick: Rory McIlroy

Wells Fargo Units: 2.5

2024 Net Units: 139.35

We were fortunate to find our second outright of the season when Taylor Pendrith won his first tournament at the Byron Nelson. Pendrith paid out 32 units after we invested 6.7 units in the tournament. Our 25.3-unit net brings us way up for the season and a profit is all but guaranteed for 2024.
