Weight can mean a lot of things. Two guys could be 250 pounds, but one could look like Brock Lesnar, and the other could look like Joey Butler. While basketball may be a game built on speed and skill over brute force, there is still a place in basketball for a guy who has the weight and ability to work his way inside and to the basket (see: Randolph, Zach).

How much does weight matter for rookies? Does a heavier rookie have a better chance at making an immediate impact in the NBA compared to a lighter rookie who may be a year or two in the weight room away? Or is it the opposite – does a heavier rookie signal he may be out of shape and thus ineffective? Let’s find out.
