Tuesday’s NBA action will conclude with a matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers in Hollywood. Entering play, Philadelphia (27-16) owns the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Los Angeles (23-22) has the sixth-best record in the Western Conference through their first 45 games. This evening, oddsmakers are anticipating a competitive game between these two teams, pricing the Clippers as 2-point home favorites on the spread.
Philadelphia 76ers
West coast road trip
Philadelphia began a five-game west coast road trip this past Saturday with a 118-117 win over the Utah Jazz. On Sunday, they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 113-112 for their second consecutive narrow victory. Tonight, playing their third game in four nights, they have no notable names on the injury report.
Though fatigue could be an issue for Joel Embiid and James Harden, each of whom played 36 minutes or more in the first two games of this trip, Tobias Harris should be well-rested after sitting out Saturday’s win against Utah.
Improved performance from the bench
During the first two months of the season, Philadelphia had one of the least effective second units in the entire NBA, ranking 28th in bench points per game across their first 28 contests. In their last 15 games, during which they are 11-4, the 76ers rank 16th in the league in bench scoring – a far cry from elite, but more than serviceable, especially in comparison to their early season numbers.
Los Angeles Clippers
Paul George questionable
As of this writing, Paul George is questionable for tonight’s action against the 76ers. Per Cleaning the Glass, the Clippers rank in the 60th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 79th percentile in defensive efficiency when George is on the court this year, compared to the 6th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 64th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is off of the floor.
Since George last played a full game on January 2, Los Angeles is 2-4 overall, ranking 23rd in Net Rating in that span, having been outscored by 4.8 points per 100 possessions. His status is worth monitoring as tip-off approaches.
Who will step up for the Clippers if George is OUT?
If George ends up on the sidelines tonight, Norman Powell and Kawhi Leonard are two candidates for expanded roles on the offensive end of the floor. Per CourtIQ, both Leonard (+3.9%) and Powell (+3.8%) receive sizable increases in usage when George, John Wall, and Luke Kennard are not on the floor.
In these situations, Leonard is averaging 27.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per 36 minutes of action. Powell is averaging 26.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per 36 minutes.
76ers vs. Clippers – Picks & Predictions
Assuming Paul George ends up on the floor for this contest, the game has a good chance to hit the over. Per Cleaning the Glass, the Clippers offense improves from the 6th percentile to the 60th percentile when George is on the court. If looking to get ahead of the market, bettors should look to grab the over between these two teams prior to confirming the status of George. More risk-averse bettors should wait until closer to tip-off before locking in any action on this contest.
