MLB Player Props Today

Luis Garcia o5.5 strikeouts (-118), FanDuel

In his first start of the season, Luis Garcia had only four strikeouts against the Chicago White Sox, but he has a more favorable matchup for his second turn through the rotation. This afternoon, he will get to face the Minnesota Twins, which rank 22nd in in-zone contact% and 17th in swinging-strike% through their first 266 plate appearances this season. Last year, Garcia ranked in the 65th percentile in whiff% – meaning that he excelled at getting opposing hitters to swing and miss. Against the White Sox, Garcia featured his cutter 55.2% of the time against right-handed batters, generating a 40.0% whiff rate on the offering. On Saturday, the Twins have seven right-handed hitters in the lineup. Take the over here.

Jose Berrios u17.5 outs recorded (+100), BetMGM

Simply, Jose Berrios is not an effective pitcher. Though he has talent and prospect pedigree, the results on the mound are consistently underwhelming and, at times, disastrous. In his first start of the year, Berrios allowed eight earned runs against the Kansas City Royals. Across his final 11 starts in 2022, he posted a 5.77 ERA, 4.40 FIP, and recorded 18 outs only six times. Today, he gets a challenging matchup against the Los Angeles Angels, which rank fourth in walk rate to begin the new year. Expect Berrios to have difficulty getting efficient outs on Saturday – take the under.

MLB DFS Pick’em

Joe Ryan more than 6.0 pitcher strikeouts, PrizePicks

Through their first 313 plate appearances to begin the new campaign, the Houston Astros rank 17th in swing% on pitches outside of the strike zone and 21st out of 30 teams in contact% on those swings. In Joe Ryan’s first start this season, he threw his new sweeper 37.2% of the time against right-handed batters, inducing an incredulous 50.0% whiff rate – generating many swings at pitches outside of the strike zone. This afternoon, the Astros have seven right-handed bats in the lineup against Ryan. Expect an abundance of strikeouts once again for Houston in this matchup.
