Daily Research Spotlight: NFL Ceiling Stats
Daily Research Spotlight is a recurring article series which delves into one of RotoGrinder’s Daily Research Tools each posting. “Spotlight” articles shed light on the purpose of a particular tool, and how to best utilize it while building your Daily Fantasy lineups. We provide these tools to help you save time while building your Daily Fantasy lineups, by pinpointing key information on a sport-by-sport basis. December 21, 2012 Spotlight: NFL Ceiling and Consistency Ratings

This week’s Daily Research Spotlight looks at the NFL Ceiling and Consistency Ratings Page, which is useful for both GPP players and guys who prefer head-to-heads and double ups. For GPP players, you want to find guys who can put up a big score and might be risky. For H2H and double-up fans, you need guys you can trust to get you at least double-digit points. It’s definitely one of the coolest tools RG has to offer, and we’re here to help you better understand it.
Check out the NFL Ceiling and Consistency Ratings Page Here
Beyond rating consistency and ceiling potential, this page also shows you the minimum and maximum fantasy score for each player this season and the variance and range from their fantasy scores throughout the first 15 weeks of NFL action. This tool does not take into account games where a player put up 0 fantasy points unless it was a bye week or they were injured.
Most Consistent NFL Players At Each Position
In this section we will take a look at which players, at each NFL skill position, have scored at least 12 fantasy points in any given game based on FanDuel scoring.

These three have posted at least 12 fantasy points 11 of 14 games this season.
Consistent Wide Receivers

#1) A.J. Green, Calvin Johnson, and Brandon Marshall
- Consistency Rating: 78.6%
Arguably the 3-best wide receivers this season have posted 12 fantasy points or more in all but 3 games this year.
#2) Cecil Shorts
- Consistency Rating: 69.2%
A bit of a surprise here, when healthy Shorts has had 12 or more FP in 9 of 13 games.
#3) Reggie Wayne
- Consistency Rating: 64.3%
Wayne has put up 12 fantasy points or more in 10 of 14 games he’s played this year.
Consistent Tight Ends

#2) Tony Gonzalez and Aaron Hernandez
- Consistency Rating: 50.0%
#3) Dennis Pitta and Heath Miller
- Consistency Rating: 42.9%
So sure there are some players here who seem obvious but guys like Cecil Shorts and Dennis Pitta might seem like better GPP plays when in reality they have been some of the most trustworthy players at their respective positions.
Highest Ceiling Players at Each Position
In this section we’ll take a look at some guys who have a high ceiling, which we define to be games of scoring 20 or more fantasy points in FanDuel’s scoring system. Rather than looking at the Top-3 for each position though, I’ll discuss some of the notables for each skill spot and then discuss the “risk/reward” factor that comes with them.
High Ceiling Quarterbacks

- Robert Griffin III – He has posted 20 or more fantasy points in 61.5% of the games he’s played this year. The major reason you see a ton of variance and a large range of fantasy outputs is because of the week he went out with an injury early on, but other than that he has also been remarkably consistent as well.
- Andy Dalton – Dalton is a great example of a high-risk, high-reward player. He has put up over 20 fantasy points in 7 of his 14 games so far this season. But he’s also put up under 12 fantasy points in 3 other games including a minimum score of 7. Dalton is a good play in weeks where the match-up is solid for GPPs.
High Ceiling Running Backs
- Adrian Peterson – This one is certainly an obvious pick. He’s put up over 20 fantasy points in 50% of his games this year, the highest total among any non-QB. He’s been a beast all season long and is great for GPPs or H2Hs if you can afford him.
- Jamaal Charles – He’s far from consistent, with scores ranging from 37.8 to 2.5 and he’s had 7 games where he didn’t even reach the 12 fantasy point mark. But he’s also had 3 huge games where he went over 20 fantasy points which makes him a good GPP upside play because if you can hit on one of those weeks you’ll be in great shape.
High Ceiling Wide Receivers

- Brandon Marshall – He has the most games over 20 fantasy points this season among WRs with 6. Again he’s an upper-echelon guy you expect a lot from but when deciding between all of the top-tier wide outs this season, Marshall should always find his way on at least one of your GPP rosters.
- Danario Alexander – Probably the best example of risk/reward is Alexander. Last week he drops a 0 on the field. But he’s gone over the 20 fantasy point mark in 3 of his 8 games since joining San Diego. If he misses, well you’re gonna have a bad week. But if he hits, you will be separating yourself from the pack.
Which High Ceiling Guys To Use for GPPs Week 16
Just to go next level, I decided to take a look at some receivers who offer great upside for your GPPs this weekend. These are guys that I overheard Cal and Cameron talking about in Vegas as players they always consider for their great potential as well, so you know they’re rock solid.
- Michael Crabtree – The matchup is tough but Crabtree actually has one of the highest ceiling ratings among WRs. He has gone over the 20 fantasy point mark in 3 of 14 games this season.
- Victor Cruz – Cruz sports a pretty low 50% consistency rating but his ceiling rating of games with over 20 fantasy points is 34.7%.
- Wes Welker – Welker is another great example of a risk reward pick, which you might not expect but with the Patriots offense it can be hard to predict who gets the touches. Welker has gone over 20 fantasy points in 3 games this year, but has only gone over 12 fantasy points in 42.9% of games.
Hope all of this helps and check back in with us next week for another Daily Research Spotlight article. Good luck this weekend Grinders!
