DFS Tournament Report: July 28th
Three qualifiers into live finals and a $500,000 GPP headlined the DFS landscape on Tuesday night and a couple of the biggest names in DFS, including one of RotoGrinders own on-the-air personalities, nabbed the coveted seats. In fact, the aforementioned RG superstar would take home not one, but two seats, with two entirely different lineups including a dramatic come-from-behind victory after his other lineup had fallen out of the top spot. Let’s take a look at how these tournaments went down:
DraftKings $4 Million FBWC Qualifier
MFord108 (#235 in RG MLB rankings) and nsamp7 kept the one and two spots early on thanks largely to the strong starts of Davis and Syndergaard. Nsamp7 would move into the front with the help of a Devon Travis HR and also having Soto at C but then it was RotoGrinders own stevietpfl (#84 in RG TPOY race) who would move into the top spot after a Jose Abreu homer moved his White Sox stack to the top. That lead would be short lived, however, as cirochollywood with the help of a monster game from Chris Young of the Yankees would assume command. It was a lead he would hold for quite some time until well-known DFS player dandydon moved into the lead with his Yankees stack courtesy of a late Brett Gardner home run off of a position player. That would be the difference and it would give dandydon the coveted seat to the $4M FBWC, a package worth a grand total of $55,500.
Final Results:
1. dandydon 214.3 $1,000 + $55,500 value package to $4M Fantasy Baseball World Championship
2. zotherguy 213.05 $300
3. cirochollywood 210.3 $200
4. jsmanoc 209.7 $100
5. nedelman 209.3 $60
FanDuel $500K Super Monster
The early lead went to tipandpick off the strength of Chris Davis and his two home runs and the strong start of Noah Syndergaard, whom it seemed every one rostered tonight. Tipandpick would hold the lead for the first hour until the thing known as the Chicago White Sox happened and then it would be dakimbell moving to the top of the lead with his Syndergaard/White Sox stack that included great games from Geovany Soto, Jose Abreu, and Melky Cabrera. Add in a homer from Carlos Correa and dakimbell would hold the lead for what would be most of the night. In fact, he’d hold it until a Nelson Cruz home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in what would be the last game to finish. That home run moved clemben10 into the lead by .5 points and would be enough to secure him the $100,000 first-place prize money after a meaningless Cruz out late in the game dropped the lead to .25 points. Dakimbell would have to settle for $50,000 for his second-place finish, no small consolation prize indeed.
Final Results
1. clemben10 – 81.5, $100,000
2. dakimbell – 81.25, $50,000

FanDuel $4 Million WFBC Qualifier ($1,065 Entry)
It was the al_smizzle show from start to finish as he would move into the top spot within the first two hours of play thanks to a Chicago White Sox stack and the strong arm of Syndergaard. A little Devon Travis dong didn’t hurt either. It was a lead the GrindersLive host would not relinquish as he cruised to the seat with no competitor finishing within five points of him. Smizzle explained why he went with a White Sox stack when he told us “the White Sox were going to be overlooked because they were an underdog facing off against a handedness of pitcher that has stymied them all year long, but they’ve been playing much better of late and Wade Miley is exactly the type of pitcher I’m willing to target for a GPP as he can blow up from time to time as he did tonight. The game had the third highest run total on the slate and I thought they had a good chance to break out while being massively under owned.”
Final Results
1. al_smizzle – 70.5, $48,444 value package to $4 Million WFBC
2. paulyshorts – 63.75, $8,000
3. ms_baseball – 58.75, $4,000
4. kingofqueens – 56.0, $3,000
5. zzzimsleeping – 53.75, $3,000
6. gnawh86 – 51.75, $2,111.50
7. ryanmax – 51.5, $2,111.50
FanDuel $4 Million WFBC Qualifier ($200 Entry)
The lower buy-in Qualifier of the night saw al_smizzle again surge to the lead with his Syndergaard/White Sox stack and it looked for the longest time as if that lineup would bring him his second seat of the night. A late surge by ms_baseball off the strength of the aforementioned Gardner home run knocked that al_smizzle line up down to second. However, not all hope was lost as Smizzle had a Yankees stack of his own and still had a pitcher going in Zachary Godley. That lineup was down by less than four points which meant if Godley could pick up the win then the second seat would be his. Smizzle sweated on Twitter with his DFS friends and cohorts and Godley left the game with a five run lead. “Outs!” was the rally cry for Smizzle and when the Diamondbacks held on for the win, the seat was his!
Zeidenfeld took a few more moments to explain the thinking behind his second lineup (he only entered two this evening): “the Yankees had the second highest expected run total on the night (Blue Jays were first), were facing a bad pitcher in a good hitter’s park. They have been playing really well, have a lot of talented players with realistic home run power so they seemed like a great place to start. Godley was cheap, Seattle sucks, and was hoping for 10-12 points from him. Safeco is large.”
Zeidenfeld did have one regret at not putting together a NYY/CHW stack and throwing it into the Super Monster. “That stack would have won the $100,000 going away by like 20 points,” he told us. An excited Zeidenfeld went on to tell us that he’s thrilled winning a seat to a live final. “Live finals are the DFS equivalent of making a final table in the WPT or WSOP. They’re signature events that most people never get to attend as a competitor and some people only get to live finals once, maybe twice. The second seat will let me take a shot with the second team. Having that second bullet is a big edge.”
Congrats on a great night, Al!
