Fantasy Football QB Preview

Justin Fields

Which quarterback in 2022 had the most rushing yards?

It wasn’t Daniel Jones (708). It wasn’t Jalen Hurts (760). It wasn’t Josh Allen (762). It wasn’t Lamar Jackson (764). Justin Fields had the most rushing yards among quarterbacks last year and it wasn’t particularly close (1,143). In fact, that’s the second most rushing yards ever from a quarterback in a single season (the most belonging to the aforementioned Jackson in 2019).

Mobile quarterbacks are valuable in fantasy because they have more than one pathway to success. Drafting someone like this is effectively taking on another running back who will also happen to throw touchdown passes.

While it’s true Fields was 26th in passing yards last season, it’s worth noting that this year he’ll be passing to wide receivers DJ Moore, Chase Claypool, and Tyler Scott, as well as tight end Robert Tonyan. These offensive acquisitions should improve Field’s numbers through the air, and he’s already proven he can get it done on the ground.

Justin Herbert

Last season, Justin Herbert ranked second in passing, throwing 4,739 yards and 25 touchdowns. The Chargers QB was fairly mobile himself last season, rushing for 683 yards and eight touchdowns.

Herbert will be throwing passes to the steady and reliable Keenan Allen as well as to the more boom-or-bust talent in Mike Williams. Then there’s first round pick Quentin Johnston, who has already shown himself to be a deep threat in the Chargers’ training camp. Add in new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and Justin Herbert comes into 2023 as a high-upside quarterback worthy of consideration.

Aaron Rodgers

The 2023 Jets is something of a Packers reunion.

Aaron Rodgers will be slinging the football to the likes of Allen Lazard, who had the best two years of his young career under Rogers most recently. Rodgers will also be reconnecting with longtime Packers teammate Randall Cobb. As for weapons new to Rodgers, there’s Garrett Wilson, who logged over 1,100 receiving yards in his rookie season. There’s also Breece Hall, a capable pass-catching back when healthy.

On top of that, Rodgers will once again be working under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. With Hackett, Rodgers won back-to-back MVP awards. He also threw the most touchdowns of his career (48) in 2020. The circumstances are in place for Aaron Rodgers to bounce back from his pedestrian final year with the Packers.

Robert Brown (Epignosis)

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
