Week 3 of the NFL regular season will begin tonight with a matchup between the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. Entering play, New York is 1-1 and looking to get back over the .500 mark. San Francisco is 2-0 after a pair of road wins and will be looking to stay perfect on the season, playing in front of their home fans for the first time this fall.

Ahead of kickoff, oddsmakers have priced the 49ers as 10.5-point favorites on the spread in this matchup. The total for this contest is set at over/under 43.5 points.

Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.

New York Giants

Banged-up New York offense

On Thursday night, the New York Giants will be without running back Saquon Barkley, left guard Ben Bredeson, and left tackle Andrew Thomas. Through two weeks, Barkley had received 29 of the 32 carries given to running backs for the Giants. In his absence, the less talented Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell will see an expanded workload. On the offensive line, the left side of the protection will feature Joshua Ezeudu and Mark Glowinski. According to PFF, Glowinski ranks 67th out of 68 players at his position in pass blocking grade in 2023. Daniel Jones and company are likely to have a difficult time putting points on the board this evening.

Giants defense missing key contributors

The Giants will also be without edge defender Azeez Ojulari on Thursday. Ojulari is one of the team’s best pass rushers, having totaled 5.5 sacks in only seven games played last season. Linebacker Micah McFadden is also listed as questionable for this evening’s affair due to a neck injury. He is second on the defense in tackles through the first two weeks of the year. New York is still yet to record a sack in 2023, and they figure to have trouble getting pressure on Brock Purdy again tonight with key players banged up on the defensive side of the ball.

San Francisco 49ers

49ers offense looking Purdy early in the season

The 49ers have scored 30 points in back-to-back games to begin the new campaign, with both of those contests coming on the road. Tonight, they return home, where Brock Purdy had a 9-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season. If there is one weakness in this offense, it has been the offensive line, which has allowed four sacks in two games. Fortunately for this group, getting after the passer is a weakness for the Giants, making it a non-issue ahead of kickoff on Thursday.

Ambry Thomas listed as questionable

Ambry Thomas typically lines up out-wide for the San Francisco secondary unit, but his potential absence does not figure to be a major issue for this group. Last week, Thomas played only 14 snaps, after playing 34 snaps in Week 1. If Thomas is unable to suit up, the depth of this unit will be hurt, but the top contributors for San Francisco’s defense are all healthy and ready to play tonight.

Giants vs. 49ers – Picks & Predictions

If this matchup occurred later in the season, it is likely that the 49ers would be closer to two touchdown favorites. The market seems to still be giving some respect to the Giants after their successful 2022, but this is a completely different roster than what we saw last fall. The absence of Saquon Barkley and Azeez Ojulari only further complicates things for New York against a far superior opponent. Do not be surprised if this contest is over by the half.
