Introducing the FanShare Buzz Score

The best daily fantasy sports players recognize the importance of ownership in building a winning GPP lineup. But how do you actually determine the likely ownership level for a particular player?

Similar to financial markets, industry sentiment can often be an effective indicator of player ownership in DFS. The challenge is that in today’s age of social media and information overload, it is increasingly difficult to stay on top of player trends in fantasy sports. That was, until FanShare Sports came along. Using the FanShare Buzz Score, you can easily measure a player’s “buzz” level relative to other players on the slate. In other words, we tell you who’s actually flying under the radar, and who’s not.

Tracking industry sentiment is what we do best at FanShareSports.com. Each week, we break down huge volumes of data into bite-sized trends, which are easy to digest for the busy DFS player who can’t afford to spend 40hrs/week on Twitter. The FanShare Buzz Score condenses these trends into a user-friendly “score” of 1-10. A score of 10 represents the highest level of buzz relative to other players on the slate, and 1 the lowest. While not all buzz is positive, a higher buzz score typically means that player is trending for higher ownership. You can combine the Buzz Score with our “industry sentiment” ratings to provide additional context and allow for a more refined approach to evaluating potential ownership. Finally, the Buzz Score can be a great “top down” approach to keeping your pulse on all the latest player trends from across the DFS industry.

Now that we’ve explained what the Buzz Score is and why it’s useful, let’s take a look at some early trends that have already started to develop for Week 1. Despite the fact that we still have some time before the first DraftKings Millionaire Maker contest of the season (September 9th), the Week 1 discussion is well underway.

With New England RB Sony Michel succumbing to a knee injury during the pre-season, the early Week 1 buzz was going to versatile NE RB Rex Burkhead (Buzz Score: 10), who is projecting for a heavier workload at home against Houston, and is priced at only $4,200 on DraftKings. However, as tends to happen in DFS, there is late-week news that is shifting the goal-posts. Le’Veon Bell’s holdout situation in Pittsburgh has the industry buzzing over potential fill-in RB1 James Conner ($4,500, BS: 5.8) who seen his Buzz Score increase more than any player over the past 24hrs.

At the QB position, Andy Dalton is garnering industry support ($5,800, BS: 10) as he squares off against Indy’s leaky passing DST with a full arsenal of offensive weapons at his disposal. Meanwhile, it’s one of Andrew Luck favorite targets from two seasons ago, Jack Doyle ($3,600, BS: 10) buzzing at the TE position.

WR can be one of the trickier positions to project from an ownership standpoint, but look for names like Emmanuel Sanders ($5,000, BS: 10) and Keelan Cole ($3,800, BS: 9.4) to be popular based on perceived value in their pricing relative to their projected opportunity. Meanwhile, as an example of why it’s important to monitor sentiment in addition to buzz, Odell Beckham Jr. ($7,000, BS: 5.5) currently has the eighth-highest WR Buzz Score but only a 50% sentiment rating, meaning the industry isn’t sold on his Week 1 matchup against a Jaguars DST that allowed the fewest fantasy points per game to opposing WR’s last season.

Finally, the Baltimore Ravens ($3,800, BS: 10) are looking like the early chalk at DST with industry expectations remaining very low for Nathan Peterman and the Buffalo Bills offense to start the season.

Of course, three days is an eternity in daily fantasy and a lot can happen between now and September 9th. As such, be sure to monitor the FanShare Buzz Scores and Industry Sentiment Ratings accordingly. We look forward to adding value to your DFS endeavours on RotoGrinders Premium this coming season and receiving your feedback on the FanShare Buzz Score.
