Covering The Bases: MLB DFS Picks Today for Saturday 8/2
Long-time grinder, Justin Van Zuiden (aka stlcardinals84), is here to cover the bases for the upcoming MLB DFS slate on DraftKings and FanDuel. Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Cards has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his favorite MLB DFS picks.
Welcome to the first weekend of August! We had a wild Friday night to kick off the month, highlighted by the Marlins finishing off a 13-12 walk-off win over the Yankees… only to be topped by the Rockies completing a 17-16 walk-off win of their own in a game where they trailed by 9 runs before they even came to bat for the first time. It was game over if you didn’t have Coors Field exposure last night.
It will be interesting to see how Paul Skenes pitches in Coors Field today, but that game is not on our main slate. We have a 7-game main afternoon slate that includes only the 4 PM games and matches between FD and DK (hurrah!). That slate will be the focus of today’s article on a day where games are otherwise quite spread out.
This looks like a quiet weather day, so we should be all systems go for lineup builds. Still, you can visit our MLB weather page before lock to make sure that hasn’t changed.
Let’s dig in and see what this Saturday afternoon has to offer!

TOP TIER PITCHERS
Tarik Skubal vs. Phillies
Zack Wheeler vs. Tigers
Brandon Woodruff vs. Nationals
What a fun matchup we have in Philadelphia this afternoon, with appointment viewing on tap in a matchup between Tarik Skubal and Zack Wheeler. Here are the numbers for both of them this year:
Skubal – 2.09 ERA, 2.35 xFIP, 33.8% K, 3.8% BB
Wheeler – 2.56 ERA, 2.65 xFIP, 33.3% K, 5.4% BB
As you can see, there’s really not much separating them with the exception of Wheeler having a slightly higher walk rate. Both are facing good opposing offenses, but in a vacuum, I will give a slight edge to Skubal. He has the better numbers by a touch, and he will have the L/L matchup advantage against the biggest power bats for the Phillies in Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Still, it’s close enough between them to where I will let salary be my guide as well. On FD, I am giving the edge to Skubal, where they are priced similarly. On DK, I am giving the edge to Wheeler given his helpful $1,000 discount. Both are fine options.
We also have Brandon Woodruff hanging out in this friend group. Woodruff has looked great since returning from the injured list, as he has posted a 2.01 ERA with a 29/3 K/BB ratio in 4 starts. However, he doesn’t come at a notable discount and has yet to get beyond 6 innings or 85 pitches in any of his starts. The Brewers are playing the long game with him, and he just doesn’t have the same ceiling as Skubal or Wheeler. As such, he’s a clear #3 in this tier despite a favorable matchup.
