What is your preferred tournament format (e.g. large-field, single-entry) to play on this slate? How do you plan to beat that field of opponents? What tactic or strategy will set you apart?

CheeseIsGood: I am very lukewarm on every stack on this slate, including the Padres. I don’t really think this is going to be one of those slates where we get overwhelming chalk at Coors Field, so just fading the Padres is not much of a strategy. My preferred strategy is simply not to go out of my way to fully stack at all. It’s a big enough slate that some stack is bound to go off, but I see a bunch of good individual matchups without any can’t-miss teams as a whole. With this kind of build, it works equally well in MME or smaller tournaments. Because I’m not crazy about anything and not super confident in my choices, I’m going to focus on smaller single-entry tournaments where you don’t have to get everything right to win.

stevietpfl: I’m going to focus on single-entry contests. I don’t love any of the stacks on this slate. I’m planning to fade the Padres and Dodgers, as I think they’re going to carry the most ownership. I’ll play the pitchers I like and find some lower-owned stacks. My favorite stack to build around will be the Angels.

Dean78904: I think we all collectively agree that Fernando Tatis Jr. is a “superstar,” but it is really startling how pedestrian his numbers are vs. LHP dating back to last season — a .107 ISO with 5 HRs in 284 ABs. For reference, J.P. Crawford and teammate Jose Iglesias have a higher ISO. Tatis has as many total HRs (4) since June 24 as Kyle Schwarber hit in one game a week ago. I’m not saying Tatis is bad at baseball, but I think he is too expensive and will be too popular for the upside he has shown. I focus on single-entry and smaller-field contests, where a popular player like Tatis will see his pOWN% rise. I get all the reasons to play Tatis (Coors Field, Kyle Freeland, bad bullpen, etc.), but I just don’t expect to do so.

Who is your favorite pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

CheeseIsGood: Ian Seymour (FD) / Jose Soriano (DK) — We have a lot of aces, and they are all good. But we also don’t have much clarity among those aces, and we have a lot of high-end bats to spend on. This makes me a little more interested in saving some salary at pitcher. While he’s been up and down, we’ve seen Soriano be every bit as good as the $10,000 pitchers quite often this season. He can pile up innings with easy outs due to his ground balls and pitch count, and he still looks underpriced on DK. On FD, I like Soriano as well, but I’m even more intrigued by a $7,400 Seymour. He doesn’t have a huge pitch-count leash, but he’s been fantastic this season, and having an opener in front of him improves his chances for a win.
