Million Dollar Musings: MLB DFS Picks Today for Friday 9/11

Happy Friday! We close out the week with a big 12-game slate on DK and an 11-game slate on FD. For some reason that is unbeknownst to me, FD is not including the PHI/ATL game, which changes the slate quite a bit on the pitching side with Chris Sale on the mound. We still have no shortage of pitching options on both sites, but that is going to add a lot of ownership to Blake Snell on FD. On the hitting side, the Mariners are popping a bit with their trip to the Greater West Sacramento Metro Area, but then we have one of those slates with a tangly mess of pretty good-looking offense.

Friday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings and FanDuel

We have a pretty good top tier of pitchers, although there are two clear top options on DK and one on FD that stand out. I’m going to use $8,500 on DK as my cut-off between tiers, though it’s not super clear where the best places are to draw lines between all these options.

TOP TIER PITCHING

• Chris Sale vs. Phillies – 30.6% K, 4.8% BB, 2.10 ERA, 2.81 SIERA
• Blake Snell at Marlins – 32.6% K, 10.6% BB, 1.97 ERA, 3.28 SIERA
• Parker Messick at Twins – 26.1% K, 6.8% BB, 2.53 ERA, 3.50 SIERA
• Nolan McLean at Yankees – 26.7% K, 9.7% BB, 3.06 ERA, 3.76 SIERA
• Taj Bradley vs. Guardians – 27.3% K, 10.1% BB, 3.95 ERA, 3.84 SIERA
• Drew Rasmussen vs. Astros – 26.1% K, 4.5% BB, 2.88 ERA, 3.27 SIERA
• Sonny Gray vs. Royals – 22.1% K, 6.5% BB, 2.69 ERA, 3.83 SIERA
• Carlos Rodon vs. Mets – 26.2% K, 12.7% BB, 3.09 ERA, 4.32 SIERA

Chris Sale has been other-worldly fantastic this season, with completely elite skills and unmatched consistency. In a world where seemingly every ace gets shelled every few starts, Sale has allowed more than 3 runs just once all season, and that was back in early April. He is as matchup-proof as they come and has one of the most consistent pitch-count leashes on top of the elite skills. If you want to play Blake Snell ahead of him, it’s defensible based on the ceiling and matchup, but for me, Sale is the clear SP1 here.

Blake Snell is the first of several pitchers who can get close to Sale’s best-case scenario ceiling. He’s been great since coming off the IL and appears to have no pitch count concerns to speak of. The control will never be safe, but he hasn’t walked more than 3 batters in a start yet, and at that level, his upside remains intact. Matchup also barely matters for Snell, but the ballpark certainly helps, and Miami should have 5 high-strikeout bats in the lineup against him. Surprisingly, his matchup is really no better for power than Sale’s, but again, with pitchers of this ability, they can beat anyone. On DK, I’d play both if I could, but assuming I can only get one, it’s still Sale over Snell for me. On FD, Snell is kind of all alone up top, and ownership might be an issue here. We haven’t seen the bad Snell in a while, but he’s always lurking, and while he’s certainly my SP1, this is not an all-in type of pitcher for me.
