Happy Monday! We open the week with a small 5-game slate, starting a little earlier than usual at 6:40 p.m. ET. It’s a slate with one clear ace pitcher and then a big group of unknowns that should lead to some spread-out ownership on both sides of the ledger. Let’s dig in and see what we find.

Chris Sale is light-years ahead of the pack, and after him, there are a whole bunch of questions marks.

ONE ACE AND SOME PEOPLE WITH ARMS

Chris Sale at Diamondbacks – 32.7% K, 4.9% BB, 2.71 ERA, 2.56 SIERA
Andrew Abbott vs. Rockies – 18.5% K, 9% BB, 3.28 ERA, 4.85 SIERA
Gavin Williams at Tigers – 2nd start of season
Davis Daniel vs. Rangers – 3rd start of season
Chris Paddack at White Sox – 20.3% K, 5.2% BB, 5.29 ERA, 4.06 SIERA
Jon Gray at Angels – 20.6% K, 6.4% BB, 3.92 ERA, 4.11 SIERA
Chris Flexen vs. Twins – 17.2% K, 9% BB, 5.08 ERA, 4.94 SIERA
Ryan Feltner at Reds – 19.3% K, 6.2% BB, 5.60 ERA, 4.12 SIERA

Chris Sale is arguably the best pitcher on any slate, but it’s not arguable that he’s the best pitcher on tonight’s slate. If you want to fade him for salary or ownership, or baseball randomness, be my guest, but let’s not pretend like he’s not the best option by a country mile or seven. His strikeout rate is a full 10% ahead of the next closest guy on this slate, and he has the lowest walk rate to go along with it. Just play him and move on.

After Sale, we have a big ole tangled mess. There are some good matchups in here, and all the salaries are on the low side of things. We also have quite a few pitchers with very low sample sizes and/or coming back from injury, including the two we’ll discuss in the next tier…
