Million Dollar Musings: MLB DFS Picks Today for Wednesday 6/25
Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Dave Potts (aka CheeseIsGood) has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks. Cheese, one of the preeminent baseball minds in all of fantasy sports and a winner of a $1,000,000 1st-place prize on both DraftKings and FanDuel, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate.
Happy Wednesday! We have a smaller slate than last night, but it’s one that looks very similar. There is elite high-end pitching to spend on but also very obvious elite, high-end bats, starting with the Dodgers in Coors Field and continuing on with the Yankees and Cubs. It is no trick at all to find the best plays, but we are only going to be able to play a couple of them, as the salaries are again well calculated to force us into uncomfortable choices on one side or the other. We’ve also got a little bit more to keep an eye on with the MLB weather, although at this point, I’m assuming everything plays.
There is also an earlier 4-game slate starting at 2:10 PM ET, and if you’re building lineups for that, we’ll have some Expert tags and analysis available in our MLB DFS optimizer.

Wednesday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings
We have a fantastical-looking pitching slate, and I’m already scared of how few offenses are going to be playable, not to mention how expensive those few offenses will be. I will sort these pitchers into two buckets, with a dividing line of $8,500 on DK:
TOP TIER ACES
- Zack Wheeler at Astros – 32.9% K, 6.1% BB, 2.61 ERA, 2.67 SIERA
- Logan Webb vs. Marlins – 27.9% K, 4.9% BB, 2.49 ERA, 2.70 SIERA
- Max Fried at Reds – 24.3% K, 5% BB, 2.05 ERA, 3.18 SIERA
- Joe Ryan vs. Mariners – 28.7% K, 6% BB, 3.06 ERA, 3.15 SIERA
- Yoshinobu Yamamoto at Rockies – 27.9% K, 8.8% BB, 2.76 ERA, 3.32 SIERA
Okay, wow. This group is awesome, and without even considering anything about matchup or salary, I can say I would be thrilled to play any and all of these pitchers. DK has condensed the salaries enough that it’s getting pretty close to a pick’em with all five of these guys (Five Guys!) priced within $1,500 of each other. Because of the return of the Dodgers in Coors Field, and a better matchup for the Yankees in Cincinnati, as well as the Cubs in St. Louis, salary is going to matter tonight. However, I’m also initially seeing it as if you just have to decide whether you pay up for pitching or pay up for hitting. Even if you go with the cheapest of the aces (Ryan and Yamamoto), you still can’t just stack the top offenses. With that in mind, I am still looking to start up top with Wheeler and Webb.
Zack Wheeler and Webb have both been extremely consistent, both pile up innings with high pitch counts, and both have strikeout upside. While the Astros are a lower-strikeout lineup, they just don’t have the power against RHP to present any real threat to Wheeler. There is only one batter in the entire lineup with a barrel rate over 8% against RHP this season, and it would take an incredible amount of bad luck on BABIP for Wheeler to fall short of another quality start. I don’t see anyone up here as a must-play because there are so many choices, but Wheeler is my SP1.
Logan Webb continues to be as good as ever, while still showing more strikeout upside than usual. The matchup is good, but not great, however, matchup just hasn’t mattered one tiny bit. He’s just an elite ace that doesn’t demand any overthinking. You can just flip a coin between Wheeler and Webb, but ideally, I’ll just play them both on DK.
If you either can’t quite afford Wheeler and Webb, or just want to start spreading out, you’re choosing between the relative safety of Max Fried vs. the strikeout upside with more power risk from Joe Ryan. Fried has the pitch-count and innings upside of Wheeler of Webb, which adds to his DFS upside. Even at something like a strikeout per inning, when you’re getting 7 innings, that’s more than enough. He also gets a lot of extra strikeout potential from this Reds lineup, while his ground balls help mute the power risk from the ballpark. He’s my SP3 and just a skosh behind Wheeler and Webb.
The best-case-scenario game for Joe Ryan can match anyone, but assuming he faces 6 lefties, when adding in the power risk, he falls to 4th place for me. He is completely elite against righties but still at just a 20% K rate to lefties, and with a fly-ball lean, that has some obvious downside in this matchup. The salary gap between him and top three looks just right and leaves them all equally playable, but my preference is just spending up for the best.
And then we have Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Coors. FD did not give him a discount, and he’s off my board there. But on DK, he’s the cheapest of this bunch at $8,800 and worth a look. The magic has really worn off for him, with the strikeouts dwindling and a few more walk issues creeping in. Even the ground balls have faded, and there’s simply nothing in his skill set that looks as good as it did early in the season. There is still obvious talent here and plenty of upside in the matchup, but once again, the pricing looks just right. He’s the 5th-most-expensive option and only the 5th best. I prefer spending up or looking for something cheaper that will get us more bats.
MID-TIER AND BEYOND
- Matthew Boyd at Cardinals – 22.8% K, 6.1% BB, 2.84 ERA, 3.81 SIERA
