Million Dollar Musings: Wednesday, May 17

CheeseIsGood, a two-time winner of a $1,000,000 first-place prize in DFS, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate. Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Cheese has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks.
Happy Split Slate Wednesday! As we’ve seen all year, Wednesday is a busy day with games spread out all over the place. Thankfully, the sites are using the same sets of games for their slates today, so we will break up the Musings into these two sections:
5-game Early – 3:10pm ET
7-game Main – 7:07pm ET
The early slate is a little messier with Coors Field on one side and only one obvious good pitching option on the other side. The evening slate will be packed with aces but also plenty of high-end offense.
Let’s jump on in to this first set of games and see what we can find in the way of MLB DFS picks.

There really aren’t enough good options to separate into tiers, but I’ll just put a little space between these three groups of pitchers for the early slate:
Yu Darvish vs. Royals
Sonny Gray at Dodgers
Dustin May vs. Twins
Taijuan Walker at Giants
Ryne Nelson at A’s
Ross Stripling vs. Phillies
Graham Ashcraft at Rockies
Luis Medina vs. Diamondbacks
I’m Playing Darvish, Who Are Yu Playing?
The only pitchers on this slate with a strikeout rate over 25% the past two seasons are Yu Darvish and Sonny Gray. Gray has actually been the better pitcher this season, but you can’t get any more fortunate than a 0% HR/FB rate. I am more of a believer in Darvish’s skills to begin with, and there is no comparison between the matchups. We’ve seen Gray pitch well against good opponents this season, so if you want to throw some darts here at much lower ownership, I understand it. But personally, with this big a difference in matchup, I’m just calling Darvish a Don’t Overthink It. I would need a sizeable salary discount to mess with Gray, and we are not getting it.
