MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks for Thursday, August 28th

Opto% Stack

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (Cade Povich)

The Red Sox present an intriguing stack opportunity against Cade Povich, driven by the best Opto%, best stack rating, and best Value% in projections, alongside an implied team total of 4.36 runs. While Povich’s 32% strikeout rate against lefties this season poses a challenge, his limited innings and susceptibility to allowing power, especially to lefties, provide openings for the Red Sox.

The strength of the Red Sox lies in their evenly spread-out lineup, which makes them more effective as a full stack, particularly considering the potential against this Baltimore bullpen. While Povich has above-average skills against righties, most of Boston’s best hitters are righties, and they should still get plenty of opportunities against the bullpen.

Players like Alex Bregman, Romy Gonzalez, Trevor Story, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Carlos Narvaez are some of the likely starting points in a stack, and while they can be used as one-offs, their optimal use is probably as a full stack.

Opto% Stack

Houston Astros vs. Colorado Rockies (Kyle Freeland)

The Astros could very well be the chalkiest stack going up against Kyle Freeland. They have the 2nd-best Opto%, 5th-best stack rating, and 3rd-best Value%. With an implied team total of 5.28 runs, the Astros might very well lead the slate in runs scored.

Freeland’s 16.1% strikeout rate this season against righties, coupled with his inability to control batted balls, creates an ideal scenario for Houston’s lineup, particularly when considering how much better all of their righties are against LHP.

With Jeremy Pena and Jose Altuve having higher price tags, focusing on the cheaper value plays, like Christian Walker, Yainer Diaz, and Cam Smith, could be the optimal route to take. Adding Yordan Alvarez, if he is in the lineup today, further bolsters the stack’s power upside. For extreme salary relief, incorporating Chas McCormick and Mauricio Dubon into stacks is another viable option.

Overall, the perfect storm of Freeland’s vulnerabilities and the Astros’ hitting strengths positions them as one of the top stacks on the board.
