Pitcher Grind Down
- Jesse Chavez – Chavez hasn’t been able to maintain the dominance that he had earlier in the season, but he is still one of the better bullpen pitcher turned starter stories in the league. He is sporting a 2.71 ERA to go along with his K/9 of 7.9. He’s always in play because he has a nice K-rate and he plays for an offense that scores runs in bunches. I think he’ll pitch well in the mammoth Marlins’ Park tonight. Rating = 7
Salaries: $7700 FD, $16995 DS, $14200 DD, $8200 DK, $88600 FF, $23400 SS, $14200 FTD
- Anthony Desclafani – Desclafani has had a rocky start to his big league career. After his first 4 starts, his ERA is sitting at 7.59. He’s obviously a much better pitcher than the small sample size suggests, but I’m not going to bank on him turning it around tonight against one of the best offenses in baseball. Rating = 3
Salaries: $5000 FD, $8999 DS, $8000 DD, $6100 DK, $58000 FF, $15000 SS, $8000 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Oakland
Brandon Moss – In case you have been hiding under a rock, Moss hits RH pitching pretty well. In fact, he has a .378 wOBA against righties this season and gets to face a rookie RHP who really struggled in his last outing.
Additional Plays: Yoenis Cespedes, John Jaso, Coco Crisp
Miami
Giancarlo Stanton – Stanton is really the only Marlins’ batter that I am going to have any exposure to tonight. He has terrific power against both LH and RH pitching and has really hit well at Marlins Park this season.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Kevin Correia – Correia is not a recommended fantasy option tonight or anytime in the near future. He ERA is higher than his K/9 this season. Plus, he faces a tough Rangers’ offense in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. Rating = 2
Salaries: $5500 FD, $7706 DS, $9350 DD, $6000 DK, $56800 FF, $14600 SS, $9350 FTD
- Nick Tepesch – Tepesch has been very inconsistent this season, but he does have decent upside for the price and he should see plenty of run support with Correia pitching for the Twins. I see him as a nice upside play for GPP’s tonight. Rating = 5
Salaries: $5000 FD, $9795 DS, $10250 DD, $5400 DK, $52600 FF, $13000 SS, $10250 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Minnesota
Joe Mauer – Tepesch’s biggest weakness is his inability to get LH hitters out. He has given up a .358 wOBA to LHB’s in his career and Mauer makes a nice value play at 1B if you are looking to save some cap space.
Additional Plays: Oswaldo Arcia, Danny Santana
Texas
Shin-Soo Choo – This is a terrific matchup for the Rangers. Don’t be afraid to employ a mini-Rangers stack in both cash games and GPP’s. Correia has given up a .348+ wOBA to both LHB’s and RHB’s since the start of 2013.
Additional Plays: Adrian Beltre, Alex Rios, Elvis Andrus

Pitcher Grind Down
- Justin Verlander – Verlander finally had a nice outing in his last start. His velocity has been up, but he just kept giving up big outing after big outing. This may be the time to jump on Verlander at his extremely cheap price tag. He is facing an Astros’ offense that is ranked 24th against RH pitching. The Astros also strike out more times than any team in baseball. I’m drinking the Verlander Kool-Aid. Rating = 9
Salaries: $7500 FD, $14355 DS, $13100 DD, $7700 DK, $58200 FF, $18600 SS, $13100 FTD
- Brad Peacock – Peacock has a nice K-rate, but that’s about all that he has going for him. He has a 4.50 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP this season. He draws an extremely tough matchup against the Tigers who have been red hot offensively. He’s an easy avoid tonight. Rating = 3
Salaries: $5800 FD, $12448 DS, $10400 DD, $6300 DK, $ FF, $15800 SS, $10400 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
Victor Martinez – Really love Miggy here as well, but Peacock has given up a .362 wOBA to LHB’s in the last 2 seasons. V-Mart, as you know is a switch hitter that hits well from both sides of the plate. He makes a great play tonight, especially on sites where he is catcher eligible.
Additional Plays: Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez
Houston
George Springer – I’m going to avoid the Astros’ hitters in cash games tonight, but you may want to consider throwing them in a few GPP lineups. Verlander has disappointed time and time again this season and both rookies from the Astros have great power against RH pitching.
Additional Plays: Jon Singleton

Pitcher Grind Down
- Matt Shoemaker – Now is the time to start buying in on Shoemaker. He’s looked great in each of his last 2 starts against 2 tough opponents in the Indians and the Rangers. Tonight he gets a more favorable matchup as he faces the Royals in a ballpark that is tough to hit HR’s in. While the Royals strike out less than any team in baseball, I think Shoemaker is in play on multi-pitcher sites. Rating = 6
Salaries: $7100 FD, $12930 DS, $12850 DD, $7100 DK, $100400 FF, $19100 SS, $12850 FTD
- Jason Vargas – Vargas doesn’t have the highest K-rate, but he is a solid pitcher that rarely gives up big outings to his opponents. That said, I don’t like the matchup against the Angels who are ranked 4th against LH pitching this season (.338 wOBA). Rating = 4
Salaries: $6800 FD, $14425 DS, $13300 DD, $8100 DK, $92200 FF, $21500 SS, $13300 FTD
Batter Grind Down
LA Angels
Mike Trout – Everyone knows Trout crushes LH pitching. He has a .453 wOBA against southpaws this season and can score fantasy points in multiple different ways as he has both speed and power.
Additional Plays: Howie Kendrick, Albert Pujols
Kansas City
Alex Gordon – Shoemaker has been extremely efficient against RHB’s this season as he has held them to a .199 wOBA. If you are targeting any batters here, target the LHB’s as Shoemaker has given up a .351 wOBA to hitters from the left side of the plate.
Additional Plays: Eric Hosmer

Pitcher Grind Down
- Tyler Matzek – Matzek is another young lefty on the Rockies that I will be avoiding against the Brewers. This Brewers’ lineup feasts on LH pitching and put up 5 earned runs on Matzek in their last meeting. Matzek is one of the biggest underdogs on the board for a reason. Rating = 2
Salaries: $5100 FD, $11222 DS, $13250 DD, $5800 DK, $61200 FF, $13000 SS, $13250 FTD
- Kyle Lohse – Lohse is a very interesting play tonight. He should obviously see some great run support and he is facing a Rockies’ offense that is a much different team on the road. In 6 starts at Miller Park this season, Lohse has posted a 2.23 ERA with a 0.81 WHIP. I think he can give you 7 strong innings and be in line for the win which is a steal for his price. Rating = 8
Salaries: $7100 FD, $15524 DS, $15250 DD, $8400 DK, $100600 FF, $22800 SS, $15250 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Colorado
I don’t mind the LHB’s of Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon here, but I like the Lohse side of this matchup better. The Rockies have struggled to get things going offensively on the road.
Milwaukee
Carlos Gomez – It’s hard to narrow the top play down to one batter as there are a ton of great matchups here. That said, I like the fact that Gomez has both speed and power. He has a .386 wOBA against LH pitching this season and his price has come down a bit across the industry.
Additional Plays: Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Aramis Ramirez, Rickie Weeks
