MLB Player Props Today

Brandon Williamson u4.5 strikeouts (-161), Caesars

In his MLB debut last week, Brandon Williamson managed to limit the Colorado Rockies to one earned run on two hits across 5.2 innings of work. Yet, everything about his peripherals suggests that he was extremely lucky to get out of that outing with such good surface-level numbers. His 4.53 FIP was nearly three runs higher than his ERA. He lucked into a .091 BABIP and a 100% LOB mark, despite allowing multiple barrelled balls and five hard-hit exit velocities in the contest. At AAA this season, Williamson had four strikeouts or fewer in six of his eight turns through the rotation. He had a 6.62 ERA, 6.47 FIP, 1.88 WHIP, and nearly walked more batters than he struck out. There is very little data to support five strikeouts from Williamson in a tough matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals today.

Paul Goldschmidt u1.5 total bases (+105), DraftKings

Despite an extremely favorable matchup against a weak opposing starter today, we are taking the under on Paul Goldschmidt in this spot. This is a matchup in which Goldschmidt could certainly earn extra bases with a single swing of the bat. Still, Goldschmidt is also a very patient hitter – which could earn him a free pass or two against Brandon Williamson, who posted a double-digit walk rate at AA last year and AAA to begin 2023. Goldschmidt has walked in 14.1% of his plate appearances this season, and none of those free passes count toward total bases. The under is an underrated play on Monday’s slate.

MLB DFS Pick’em

Masataka Yoshida less than 0.5 hitter strikeouts, PrizePicks

We ran this play yesterday and suffered a loss, but we are running it right back again to begin the new week. Masataka Yoshida has elite contact skills and an impressive amount of patience at the plate, which has led to a 9.8% strikeout rate to begin 2023. Today, he gets a matchup against Jaime Barria. Barria struck out only 17.1% of batters in 2022 and 14.0% of batters in 2021. To begin 2023, his overall strikeout numbers are at a career-high but still slightly worse against left-handed batters compared to right-handed batters. This is a system play at this point – expect Yoshida to put the ball in play in each of his trips to the plate this evening.
