NFL DFS Backfield Usage: Reviewing Week 10

Few NFL backfields are lucky enough to host workhorse level usage for our NFL DFS options. The snap counts, targets, and opportunity statistics we see for NFL running backs have an impact on our lineups for DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo. NFL DFS is a game where RB opportunity is king, and it is essential to know which situations are expanding or condensing. Let’s use the RotoGrinders Usage App from JoshADHD to rewind and take stock of how running back usage looked for a few key NFL teams this past week. We’ll want to understand how it could impact projections and projected ownership moving forward.

Today’s NFL DFS Running Back Snaps and Target Report

D’Andre Swift

NFL Team: Detroit Lions
Position: RB
Snap Rate: 72.9%
Team Share of RB Carries: 76.2%
Team Share of Targets:15.6%

It may have taken a bit too long but it appears that Matt Patricia finally realized that D’Andre Swift should be handling the majority of the running back touches for the Detroit Lions. Tom Pelissero reported Sunday morning that Swift would get the start at RB for the Lions and the rookie didn’t disappoint, parlaying 21 touches into 149-yards and a touchdown. Swift gets a premier Week 11 matchup to build onto his momentum as the Lions will travel to Carolina to take on a Panthers defense that has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to the RB position this season.

Duke Johnson

NFL Team: Houston Texans
Position: RB
Snap Rate: 94.7%
Team Share of RB Carries: 100%
Team Share of Targets:3.6%

Duke Johnson Week 10 5.4 DK point dud may have been a huge disappointment but his usage was extremely encouraging. Johnson was on the field for 94.7% of the Texans snaps and handled 100% of the team’s’ RB carries. Johnson’s lack of involvement as a pass-catcher (3.6% target share) was a bit surprising but I would expect that number to level out closer to the 10% target share David Johnson has seen on the season. People may be hesitant to play Johnson in Week 11 against the Patriots because of his poor Week 10 performance but that shouldn’t be the case. Duke should once again project as one of the better RB values on the Week 11 slate under the assumption he continues to handle the majority of the work out of the backfield for the Texans.

Nick Chubb

NFL Team: Cleveland Browns
Position: RB
Snap Rate: 43.1%
Team Share of RB Carries: 48.7%
Team Share of Targets:5.3%

Nick Chubb returned to action in Week 11 and rewarded those who rostered him with a solid 126-yard, 1 touchdown performance good for 21.6 DK points. While Chubb posted a solid fantasy outing, and could have had an even better game if he chose to score his second TD at the end of the game as opposed to running the ball out of bounds, it’s a bit concerning that he was on the field for only 43.1% of the team’s snaps and handled less than 50% of Cleveland’s running back carries. I expect Chubb to continue to be efficienct with his touches but his ceiling is going to be capped for as long as Kareem Hunt remains healthy and a part of the Cleveland RB rotation.
