NFL DFS Duds Report: Reviewing Week 7

It didn’t go well for everyone in this week’s NFL slate. We need to look back on the duds of DFS after a slate of an otherwise eventful day in the NFL. We had great action on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo! for daily fantasy sports, but these players may have spoiled your fun. We’ll reflect on the DFS projections and ownership projections, and look for ways we could have avoided these low scoring plays for our DFS lineups. Using our ResultsDB tool, let’s take a look back at three of the very worst picks players made.

ResultsDB Low DFS Scorers From Last Week

D.K. Metcalf

DraftKings Salary: $7,200
FanDuel Salary: $7,300
Yahoo Salary: $28
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 4.3
DraftKings Fantasy Ownership: 14.03%

You have to look hard to find chalk that actually busted in Week 7 but DK Metcalf certainly fits the bill, especially on FanDuel where he was more heavily owned. Metcalf did make the highlight reel with an unreal chase down on an interception return but was disappointing on the offensive end catching just 2-of-5 targets for 23-yards. Advocates for WR vs CB matchups are chalking this one up as a win as Patrick Peterson was largely responsible for Metcalf’s quiet night while Tyler Lockett picked apart Dre Kirkpatrick on the opposite side of the field.

Travis Kelce

DraftKings Salary: $6,300
FanDuel Salary: $7,900
Yahoo Salary: $29
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 6.1
DraftKings Ownership: 15.74%

Travis Kelce high ownership was almost entirely the cause of an extremely weak pool of TE options in Week 7. Kelce will always project as one of the top options on a weekly basis but a combination of poor weather and middling matchup made him just a ‘meh’ play against the Broncos. There’s no doubt that Kelce and the Chiefs offense also ran bad as a group due to the Kansas City DST scoring 14 points. Kelce’s Week 7 was just a blip on the radar and you can continue to play him confidently moving forward.

Chase Claypool

DraftKings Salary: $5,700
FanDuel Salary: $6,400
Yahoo Salary: $22
DraftKings Fantasy Points: 0.8
DraftKings Ownership: 11.58%

I was a little surprised that Claypool’s ownership hit double-digits in the Milly Maker this week but I guess it makes sense that people were chasing his upside. Claypool’s ownership was also likely partially inflated by game log surfers who weren’t aware that Diontae Johnson was set to return to the field in Week 7. While Claypool disappointed in a big way catching his only target for -2-yards, it’s worth noting that he was still on the field a ton and ran a route on 37-of-54 Ben Roethlisberger dropbacks. James Washington, who only ran 12 routes, was the main guy squeezed out by Johnson’s return. Claypool is unlikely to demand a dominant target share when Johnson is on the field but it was encouraging to see him get snaps over Washington.
