While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy hockey there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, salaries, and more.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. Hockey is an extremely high variance sport. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Hurricanes Offensive Outlook

5v5 (adj): 67.76 CF/60 (1) | 55.39 CA/60 (27) | 2.53 xGF/60 (5) | 2.2 xGA/60 (19)

The Hurricanes had a prime opportunity to destroy the Rangers on home ice a little over a week ago. Instead, Carolina squandered the opportunity by failing to show up and were embarrassed at home. They’ll look to return the favor in New York tonight, and the matchup is still outstanding.

This is a game that Carolina should dominate. They have the superior offense and should be able to pump a copious amount of shot attempts at 5v5. Carolina enters with a high-end CF% whereas the Rangers are poor. Basically where the Hurricane offense is good the Ranger defense struggles.

With the Rangers missing top center Mika Zibanejad, the matchup is eased a bit for the top line of Jordan Staal, Sebastian Aho, and Teuvo Teravainen. Though it looks as though Ryan McDonagh will be back, this is still a great spot for the top line. They are a top stacking option tonight against a porous Ranger defense.

Jeff Skinner, Derek Ryan, and Justin Williams are another nice line in a good spot. Williams’ inclusion on this line should help Skinner as Williams remains a skater that makes his teammates better. Skinner is a volume shooter and should thrive in a matchup against one of the worst teams suppressing shots. Ryan and Williams aren’t as talented as goal scorers so as always Skinner is a fine one-off.

Hurricanes Special Teams Outlook
New York remains a defensive liability while shorthanded. Though they don’t allow a high volume of shot attempts, they have really struggled to slow scoring chances and high-danger shot attempts. This is a nice boost to the Staal and Skinner lines as each stay together on the power play, with Staal’s top unit seeing slightly more usage. Justin Faulk can be paired with top line and Noah Hanifin with Skinner’s line, though Hanifin doesn’t offer the same upside due to his low shot rate.

Hurricanes Goaltending Outlook
Scott Darling is starting to warm up a bit, and he’ll need to stay in good form tonight against a dangerous New York offense. We saw last game that they can still be deadly without Zibanejad, so don’t look at that as a big boost for Darling. New York’s offense doesn’t drive play very well but they can pounce at any moment. Even though Carolina’s defense has been good this year and they should control the flow of the game at 5v5, this is a dangerous spot with blowup potential.
