Devils Offensive Outlook
5v5 (adj) (11 games): 55.17 CF/60 (22) | 62.52 CA/60 (6) | 2.44 xGF/60 (13) | 2.59 xGA/60 (6)
New Jersey’s second game in the Western Canada swing will be another defensive challenge, much like the Vancouver Canucks were. The Devils pulled through, though it was a high-event game and outside of Taylor Hall the freight wasn’t paid. This is likely to be the story again tonight, especially if Marcus Johansson joins Kyle Palmieri on the shelf. Edmonton has allowed a fair number of shot attempts but have been stingy in allowing quality shot attempts and scoring chances.
The usual problems with the Devils is now exacerbated with Johansson out. We’re not full Minnesota Wild here, but the forward group falls off fast after the first line.
Taylor Hall, of course, is quite familiar with the Oilers, though this squad is playing much differently than it did in his days in Edmonton. Hall, Nico Hischier, and Drew Stafford are New Jersey’s best bet for offense. They should draw out against Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the second line. This matchup isn’t poor, necessarily, as Nugent-Hopkins isn’t a shutdown center. The shot attempts should be there but the scoring chances may not be. Hall in particular will be highly owned tonight.
The Devils’ second line is a shell of what it should be with Kyle Palmieri and likely Marcus Johansson out. That leaves Adam Henrique centering Jesper Bratt and either Johansson or Brian Gibbons / Jimmy Hayes. He could also play with Hall a bit. Either way, this isn’t a great spot for Henrique and the second line as they will likely see plenty of Connor McDavid and Edmonton’s top line.
Pavel Zacha loses a ton of value playing on the third line away from the top talent, but on a two game slate, Zacha and linemate Jimmy Hayes offer tournament appeal. The third member of this line, Brian Gibbons, is playing way over his head but does have five goals (seven points) on the year. Speed merchant Miles Wood is another tournament options, as his quickness should give Edmonton’s depth problems and he sports an impressive 16.67 iCF/60 (in limited minutes).
