On Tuesday night, the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks will play Game 4 of the 2023 World Series. The Rangers will hand the ball to Andrew Heaney as they look to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Diamondbacks will counter with a bullpen game as they look to even the series at two games apiece. First pitch between the Rangers and Diamondbacks this evening is scheduled for 8:03 p.m. ET on FOX.

Ahead of first pitch, oddsmakers have priced the Diamondbacks as -115 favorites on the moneyline. The total for this contest is set at over/under 9.5 runs.

Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where baseball bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.

Texas Rangers

What to expect from Andrew Heaney

General Manager Chris Young expressed optimism in his team’s pitching approach for Game 4. The plan is to start Andrew Heaney, with Dane Dunning and Cody Bradford each available for three or four innings behind him as necessary.

Heaney appeared in Saturday’s game, meaning that he has only had two days of rest between then and now. Obviously, that is not enough recovery time for a traditional starter’s workload on Tuesday. Heaney has not thrown more than 22 pitches since October 7 and has not thrown more than 56 pitches in over a month. The plan is likely nine outs or 11 batters faced for Heaney this evening, whichever comes first. From there, expect Dunning, Bradford, and the Rangers bullpen to handle the rest of tonight’s action.

Garcia’s status uncertain for Game 4

Adolis Garcia left last night’s game in the eighth inning due to injury, and was replaced by Travis Jankowski. Garcia leads the Rangers in home runs (8), runs-batted-in (22), hits (20), total bases (45), slugging percentage (.726), and OPS (1.108) during these playoffs. He was responsible for the team’s game-winning, walk-off home run in the 11th inning of the World Series opener.

If Garcia is unable to play in Game 4, it represents a tremendous loss for a Texas offense that has mostly sputtered across its last three games. His status is worth monitoring throughout the day.

Texas bullpen usage update

Last night, everything went perfectly according to plan for Manager Bruce Bochy as far as bullpen usage goes. After Max Scherzer left the game prematurely with an injury, Jon Gray stepped in for three innings of spotless work to bridge the gap between the starter and Texas’ three trusted high-leverage options.

Josh Sborz, Aroldis Chapman, and Jose Leclerc each threw 16 pitches yesterday and none of them threw the day prior, due to it being a scheduled off-day. As a result, the Rangers have all of their relievers available as needed this evening.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Mantiply to start “bullpen game” for Arizona

Joe Mantiply will technically be the starter for the Diamondbacks tonight, but he is more of an opener. Mantiply has not faced more than six batters or thrown more than 16 pitches in a game this postseason. He has not recorded more than three outs in any of his eight appearances.

His main objective will be to neutralize Corey Seager for at least one of his at-bats in this game. During the regular season, Mantiply was dominant against left-handed hitters, with a 1.92 FIP, 0.78 WHIP, and .185 opponent batting average.

Walker, Moreno, Marte lead offensive attack

During the regular season, Christian Walker, Gabriel Moreno, and Ketel Marte each posted an .879 OPS and 138 wRC+ or better against left-handed pitching. They each get a favorable first turn through the lineup tonight against Andrew Heaney, who has struggled to a 6.00 ERA during these playoffs.

The larger concern for Arizona’s offense is the lack of reliable bats beyond their big-three. Corbin Carroll has been an integral component of the Diamondbacks offensive success this October, but he had only a .721 OPS against left-handed pitching during the regular season and a .724 OPS against southpaws after the All- Star break.

Diamondbacks’ bullpen hoping to even series

Arizona is going with a bullpen game for this evening’s contest, which means that bettors should expect at least seven different arms to find their way into action. The most important note for this arm barn ahead of first pitch is that Paul Sewald, Kevin Ginkel, and Ryan Thompson are each fully rested, none of whom have pitched since last Friday.

If the Diamondbacks can stay competitive through the first half of this game, they will have the pitching advantage in the latter frames with their top high-leverage options available and rested.

Rangers vs. Diamondbacks – Picks & Predictions

Simply, this is a must-win game for Arizona. Must-win and can-win are obviously two very different statements, but the Diamondbacks check the box no matter which way they are viewed on Tuesday. Texas could be without their top hitter, Adolis Garcia, on Tuesday, in addition to having to piece together nine innings from a collection of sub-par pitching. Expect it to be all-hands-on-deck for Arizona’s pitching staff, and for Manager Tony Lovullo to use all of his relievers in advantageous situations against a slumping Texas lineup. Arizona can, and must, win tonight to keep their championship hopes alive.
