With the topic of conversation the merger between the PGA Tour and PIF, we still have golf to play up north. The RBC Canadian Open, Canada’s National Championship, will feature a relatively competitive field despite a lack of star power up top. Rory McIlroy is the prohibitive favorite but there are plenty of questions surrounding his psyche after what seem’s to be a poorly communicated decision by the PGA. Read up about the course in our betting preview and let’s land on some picks for the week.

2023 RBC Canadian Open: PGA Golf Betting Picks This Week

Key Statistics

Unless mentioned otherwise, all strokes gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 36 rounds on the PGA Tour.

Tyrrell Hatton +1100 (FanDuel)

While I usually don’t go this far up the board, I am getting tired of ignoring the upper tier just to have bombs flame out on Sunday. No question about it, Hatton rates out as the player in the best form coming into this event.

His ball-striking numbers, approach numbers, putting, short game, etc… are all elite relative to his peers at Oakdale this weekend. His recent finishes have been consistent, and he always seems to be one bad round away from lifting a trophy.

This is the week. We are slamming a hefty 2.5 units on Hatton en lieu of spreading those bets out on a bunch of players that I don’t truly think can win.

Sahith Theegala +2800 (Caesars)

Birdies, birdies, and more birdies. Theegala is either first or second in BOB gained or birdies, depending on which category you are looking at this week.

His numbers are not astounding with respect to the field, but Theegala just continues to grind out finish after finish — typically on courses that set up far more difficult than this week’s confines. Sahith has knocked at the door a handful of times already. The win is coming.

Ahead of the US Open, Theegala can claim his first victory in front of what should be a very, very energetic crowd. We’ve seen at Phoenix that Sahith does not buckle because of noise and pressure and, instead, often embraces it. I think he is worth a look this week.

Adam Svensson +6000 (PointsBet)

I think Adam Svensson is my favorite play of the week. He rates out well across the board in our key statistical categories but, like Theegala, can string together birdies in bunches.

At this price point, I do think Svensson is worth a look given he will play in front of his people in what should be a fun environment. While narratives are typically silly in sports, I do think the Canadian contingent will have a little extra juice at their national championship. Svensson won earlier this season for the first time on tour. This event would be a marquee win for the young player as we start winding the season down.

I love Svensson as an outright bet but I think he is in strong consideration for top finisher bets, OAD, and FRL props.

Eric Cole +6600 (BetMGM)

Eric Cole treated us well last week. While never in contention, Cole never made us sweat his Top 40 and won a couple of three balls on Friday and Saturday to keep us afloat off another rough week.

Cole has the goods in the ball-striking department and brings a strong enough short game to stay in the mix with his peers this week. The veteran rookie continues to look for that huge breakthrough. It could happen this week with a slightly weaker field. Handling himself pretty well in the tougher fields, we shouldn’t shy away from Cole at this price.

Additional Outrights/Bets

Nick Taylor +7000 – Team Canada.

Taylor Pendrith +8000 – Team Canada.

Austin Smotherman +30000 – For the giggles, can get wildly hot with the putter.

Adam Svensson FRL +6000 – Love Svensson this week. I will be using him in OAD and will consider a ladder prior to the start of the tournament.

RBC Canadian Open Total Units in Play – 5.25

2023 Net Units: -43.10

The completely empty season continues. Last weekend, we had a live sweat bet on Saturday with Denny that crumbled in the last three holes. I was able to cash a couple of top finishers and a hedge on Vik but boy do we need a winner in the worst way. Good luck!
