Injury Report and Analysis

The Steelers welcome back a key cog when James Conner starts in tonight’s matchup. Conner will start but split carries with Benny Snell and Jaylen Samuels per Mike Tomlin. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Vance McDonald are both out which means that the run game will be established. The Bills do not bring any major injuries to the table.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges carries a three-game winning streak into the matchup with the Bills. The previous matchups were much friendlier for the young quarterback but the Bills are far stingier on signal-callers. The Bills are allowing an average of 191.5 passing yards per game, 5.6 yards per passing attempt, and a paltry 61.88% completion percentage. The Buffalo defense can be had on the ground — allowing 4.4 yards per rushing attempt. While Hodges has been hot, the Steelers should rely on the run.

Everything mentioned about the Buffalo defense can be copied and pasted for Pittsburgh except the rushing defense part. While being equally stingy to passers, the Steelers stifle opposing running games as well, allowing a measly 3.8 yards per rushing attempt. No surprise then that the Steelers’ defense is carrying them on this potential playoff run under the watch of “Coach of the Year” candidate Mike Tomlin — a man under fire for much of last season for perceived underachievement. The Steelers are allowing only 18.6 points per game.

The Bills? 16.3 points per game. The under is 5-1 in the Bills’ last six games. The under is 5-0 in the Steelers’ last six games. These games did not all feature two stalwart defenses. The proverbial immovable object is meeting another immovable object tonight.

The Sunday Night Football Pick

The number is really low on this implied total. That said, both defenses suffocate opposing offenses. The weather is cold. Both coaches want to run the ball. This game might be a repeat of the celebrated Army-Navy game on Saturday afternoon. Despite the number being so low, NBC flexed themselves into a smashmouth affair. I don’t expect many points — instead, plenty of tackles. Give me the under.

The Pick: Under 36.5
