Sunday Night Football Betting Picks: Dallas at New Orleans

Coming off what was essentially a bye week against the Dolphins, the Cowboys travel to New Orleans to face the 2-1 Saints. The Saints will still be without Drew Brees in the prime time affair. As a favorite on the road across online sports betting sites, the Cowboys aim to remain undefeated on Sunday night.

Sunday Night Football Betting Picks — Dallas Cowboys -3 at New Orleans Saints, O/U 47

On DraftKings Sportsbook, the Cowboys are -3 at the time of this writing. Opening at either 2.5 or 3 points across sportsbooks, the Saints are small dogs at home in a matchup between two NFC Championship hopefuls. The Cowboys are off to a really hot start albeit against weaker competition. Regardless of their opponents, Dallas is doing what good teams do to bad teams — destroy them. The Cowboys are 3-0 ATS with all of the number being relatively considerable. The offense seems to be revamped under coordinator Kellen Moore — with an emphasis on a better balance between running the football and downfield passing.

The Saints represent the first true test for the Cowboys in 2019 — especially at home. That said, without Drew Brees, the Saints find themselves in the middle of the pack with regard to offensive production. Last season, the Saints averaged 379.2 yards per game as a top-ten ranked team in the category. Thus far, the 339.7 yards per game the Saints collected leaves them 21st.

On the defensive side of the football, the Saints were able to limit opposing rushing attacks to 80.2 yards per game throughout the 2018 season. Thus far in 2019, the Saints allow 134.3 rushing yards per game with over 400 total yards given up on the ground through three games. This could bode well for the Cowboys who would love to lean on their star, Ezekiel Elliot, who broke the 100-yard mark in each of the first two games before getting a break against the Dolphins in Week 3.

So, we know the Cowboys will want to establish the run game if possible while blending in the passing game. The primary option for Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, is off to a remarkable start with four touchdowns in three weeks. Cooper, though, will likely draw the coverage of Marshon Lattimore leaving Prescott to find other options. The run game will be featured while the game is within reach as Lattimore impacts Cooper’s opportunities throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Teddy Bridgewater is struggling to ignite the downfield passing game of the Saints. Instead, Bridgewater seems content to use Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara with a shorter route tree. Kamara especially flourished against the Seahawks with nine catches for 92 yards and two total touchdowns. Look for Bridgewater to target both of these players heavily on Sunday night.

Sunday Night Football Betting Pick: The Cowboys will finally be tested on Sunday night with a tough game in a rabid environment. While Bridgewater is struggling to get going as the starter, the Saints boast weapons in Kamara and Thomas that continue to make plays without their leader. With the line currently at +3 for the Saints, I find myself wanting to take the points for the home team with the Cowboys yet to perform at a high level against a playoff contender. Admittedly, I would love to see the line move to +3.5 or +4 even and will probably keep an eye on this line over the weekend. Therefore, I will give a lukewarm endorsement to the Saints +3 on DraftKings Sportsbook, hoping to get the number at 3.5 or 4 closer to Sunday.

Generally, the props in these lots are pretty close to props offered by online sportsbooks which have not released any lines for Sunday night, yet. My favorite prop of the lot is taking the over on 6.5 receptions for Michael Thomas. I will be watching books closely this weekend to see if anything is offered for Thomas’ catch total. In the short time the Saints have started Teddy Bridgewater, Thomas has been the focal point of the offense. Thomas received 13 targets each of the last two weeks with an 88.89% completion rate on his targets.

Since we need to pick all four to be eligible for the prop, give me the under on Dak’s passing yardage, the under on a Lattimore-guarded Amari Cooper, and the over on Elliott’s rushing yardage.

Good luck with your action on Sunday. Remember, be sure to use RotoGrinders’ new NFL odds comparison tool to look at NFL Week 4 lines across the industry and find out what online sports betting site has the best price for your favorite NFL Week 4 betting picks.
