MLB Player Props Today
- Joe Ryan o5.5 strikeouts
- Jordan Montgomery o17.5 outs recorded
- Tommy Edman less than 0.5 hitter strikeouts
Joe Ryan o5.5 strikeouts (-130), PointsBet
Entering play on Thursday, the New York Yankees rank 16th in strikeout percentage as a team. They have been undisciplined at the plate, ranking 22nd in swing percentage on pitches outside of the strike zone. New York ranks 19th in contact percentage on those undisciplined swings, which makes them particularly vulnerable against Joe Ryan, who ranks in the 68th percentile in chase rate through his first two starts in 2023. The Yankees rank 12th in contact percentage on swings at pitches inside the strike zone, 16th in swinging-strike percentage overall, and 27th in called strike percentage. Typically, we like to see an umpire and a lineup before locking in a strikeout prop, but this is a line that might not be available if bettors wait until later in the day. Do not bet the house without the aforementioned information available. Still, a strikeout-friendly umpire and at least five right-handed hitters in the New York lineup could make this a very worthwhile wager.
Jordan Montgomery o17.5 outs recorded (-131), Caesars
Ahead of first pitch on Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates rank 21st in OPS and 25th in ISO against left-handed pitching in 2023. Though the new season sample size remains small (80 plate appearances), these numbers are simply a continuation of 2022, when Pittsburgh ranked 27th in OPS and 17th in ISO against southpaws. Framber Valez went seven innings against the Pirates already this season and Nick Lodolo had nine strikeouts in only five innings on April 1 before he was fully stretched out. Montgomery has a favorable matchup in this spot and should have every opportunity to get through six innings considering the fact that the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen was heavily used across the last few days. Take the over here.
MLB DFS Pick’em
Tommy Edman less than 0.5 hitter strikeouts, PrizePicks
In his career, Tommy Edman has struck out in only 16.5 percent of his plate appearances. Tonight, he will face Vince Velasquez has struck out only 10.5 percent of left-handed hitters that he has faced so far this season (sample size = 19 batters). Facing left-handed batters, Velasquez throws his fastball over 50 percent of the time. Expect Edman to have an aggressive approach at the plate this evening against a lackluster opposing pitcher. It would be surprising to see him strike out in this matchup.
