NBA Player Props, February 23, 2023

C.J. McCollum o5.5 assists (-135), DraftKings

When Zion Williamson is off of the floor this season, C.J. McCollum is averaging 6.4 assists per 36 minutes of action. Since January 31, McCollum leads the New Orleans Pelicans with 46.7 passes made per game. In that span, he is averaging 6.7 assists and 10.6 potential assists in seven games and has eclipsed this market number in five of six games played with Brandon Ingram on the floor. McCollum’s lone miss in that stretch came against the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that has allowed the third-fewest opponent assists per game since January 16. Tonight, McCollum gets a favorable matchup against a Toronto Raptors defense that ranked 23rd in opponent assists per game in that same time period, and 26th in opponent assists per game in six home contests. Expect McCollum to have a great opportunity to hit the over in this spot.

Kyrie Irving o5.5 assists (-130), DraftKings

Since joining the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving has eclipsed this market number in three of four games, including both games played with Luka Doncic in the lineup. On February 11, Irving had seven assists on a team-high 14 potential assists. On February 13, Irving had six assists on 12 potential assists. In two games with both Irving and Doncic on the floor together, it has been abundantly clear that those two players will dominate the ball, which means that there will be very little competition for assists from elsewhere on the roster. In their two games played together, no other player on the team averaged more than 4.0 potential assists. Tonight, Irving gets a favorable matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, a team that ranks 26th in opponent assists per game across their last 15 contests. Assuming we continue to see the same volume of potential assists for Irving going forward, this line is a whole number too low on the market right now.

Jordan Clarkson o4.5 assists (-132), FanDuel

Following the Mike Conley trade, Collin Sexton assumed the role as one of the primary playmakers for the Utah Jazz, leading the team with 5.5 assists and 11.8 potential assists per game from February 7 to February 13. On February 15, Sexton left Utah’s contest early against the Memphis Grizzlies, playing only four minutes. In that contest, Clarkson had six assists on 10 potential assists, with only Talen Horton-Tucker having more potential assists for the Jazz. On Thursday, Clarkson gets a favorable matchup against an Oklahoma City Thunder team that ranks 25th in opponent assists per game since January 16. Per CourtIQ, Clarkson is averaging 5.8 assists per 36 minutes this season with Sexton and Conley both off of the floor. The math makes sense here, take the over and live with the result.
