Home Run Derby: Tuesday, July 30th

Calling home runs, besides great fun, often makes the difference between a wildly profitable night in DFS and missing the cash line. Throughout the 2019 MLB season, I will endeavor to find a few home runs in three salary tiers on DraftKings. Join me throughout the year and call your home runs for monthly and seasonal RotoGrinders prizes. Without further ado, let’s play Home Run Derby!

Throughout this season, I will produce the Home Run Derby for main slates on DraftKings 2-3 days per week — selecting a home run from three different pricing tiers. If you want to call your home runs, please use these tiers for your selections to be eligible for any Derby prizes. Here are the tiers.

Luxury Box – $4,500 and above
Club Seats – $3,500 – $4400
Bleachers – Below $3,500

Hitters must be selected from the DraftKings Main Slate.

Happy Tuesday, Grinders! Tonight features a jam-packed, 14-game slate with plenty of great offensive contexts and gas can pitchers. Surely, we must see a bountiful amount of home runs tonight. Surely, the cup of bombs will be overflowing on Tuesday night. Coors Field is on the slate tonight. Two jabronis are pitching in hot Texas. The Angels face… Drew VerHagen? Tonight should be fun.

This is the last slate in July so we will be crowning a winner on Friday. Good luck to everyone that remains in the mix. Here are my three picks aimed at putting all of you in your place… second.

The statistics for each player are for the 2019 season.

Luxury Box

Justin Turner — 3B – $5,400

Turner in 2019 – .187 ISO, 39.9 FB%, 49.1 Hard%, 90.2 MPH aEV

Freeland vs RHH – .275 ISO, 88.6 MPH aEV, 34.6 FB%, 41.1 Hard%

Justin Turner is certainly not the name I thought I would be including in this tier, tonight. That said, I don’t think I can avoid getting a piece of Coors Field. Turner against a lefty feels pretty good this evening, especially when that lefty is Kyle Freeland.

Turner sees a nice ISO bump to .254 and a FB% bump to 50.5% against southpaws. The sample is relatively small at 132 plate appearances but Turner also boasts a hefty 55.9 Hard% against lefties.

Freeland is more of a groundball pitcher but that should only benefit Turner’s efforts this evening. Despite the groundball lean, Freeland has given a ton of hard contact this season. The average exit velocity at 88.6 MPH is certainly a boost for all of the Dodgers who will surely be projected for plenty of runs tonight.

Club Seats

Michael Conforto — OF – $4,200

Conforto in 2019 – .225 ISO, 42.1 FB%, 34.7 Hard%, 88.0 MPH aEV

Lopez vs LHH – .227 ISO, 90.2 MPH aEV, 45.6 FB%, 37.9 Hard%

While Michael Conforto never really blossomed into the type of player the Mets expected, he certainly has developed into a very good Major League hitter. Against righties, Conforto is a legitimate power threat with an ISO bump up to .264. With a really nice ballpark upgrade, Conforto is poised to have a really good night against Reynaldo Lopez and the White Sox.

Lopez has been quite the fun DFS commodity this season. The community seems to take a boolean approach to Reynaldo, we either stack against him or pitch him against bad teams. At this price, and facing many lefties, I think the community might like the bats, tonight. With a 45.6% fly-ball rate, the Mets should be “all systems go” tonight.

Bleachers

Robinson Cano – 2B – $3,300

Cano in 2019 – .153 ISO, 31.2 FB%, 37.6 Hard%, 90.3 MPH aEV

Lopez vs LHH – .227 ISO, 90.2 MPH aEV, 45.6 FB%, 37.9 Hard%

Twas a week ago, today, that Robinson Cano angered all Mets fans when hitting three home runs towards the end of July. Despite the Mets still thinking they are in the mix, real fans understand there is no chance the Mets see the postseason. Cano’s three home runs felt more like a slap in the face than something to celebrate. What could have been…

So, how about three more tonight Robinson? All of the aforementioned reasons with Conforto are in play with Cano. Positive park shift. Extreme fly ball pitcher. On the road. Let’s go Mets!

You know the night is going to be a bad night when the only multi-homer game comes off the bat of Eric Hosmer. Coors Field disappointed just like all of the other games as we saw a measly 22 home runs across the slate. Only one contestant found a home run… You guessed it. Shanekern03 dropped back in to remind everyone who is on top. His solo shot puts him at 44 home runs as we get ready to move into August.

Tonight is the last slate in July. Fourteen games should lead to plenty of home runs. Will Coors Field disappoint again? Can the countless gas cans wiggle out of trouble? Who is going to win July? On Friday, we wipe the slate clean and start fresh in August. I will also announce our July winner and be back with three more home run picks. Good luck, everyone.
