Key Statistics

Unless mentioned otherwise, all strokes gained statistics will be referenced over the player’s previous 36 rounds on the PGA Tour.

Collin Morikawa +2500 (FanDuel)

I know, I know. How many times Joe? How many times do you swear off a golfer to bet him the next month? The answer is…

Several. I am not going to lie. I hate myself for this. I have watched far too many events where Collin misses putt after putt. So, why here?

Well, all reports indicate that these very small greens are going to be challenging for everyone. That means, that the shear speed of these greens might just make the playing field the same across the board. Morikawa’s putting woes might be mitigated with a final score that might not even breach double digits. He checks so many other boxes. Second in approach. Par 5’s, Proximity, Par 4 scoring…

I am doing it again. One unit. FanDuel. Look to Twitter for a whinge on Saturday.

Jason Day +3000 (BetMGM)

The more we read about Muirfield Village for this year’s event, the more I want to emphasize players that can get up and down and scramble. As noted in our betting preview, Jason Day is probably in the best current form with respect to around-the-green play when combined with other noteworthy statistics.

Day’s short game as of late has been stellar and has more than made up for his slight deficiency with his irons. While we worry about his approach game at this course with extremely small greens, we are excited about his exploits around the green and out of the sand. If the winning score does not get out of hand, Day should be in the mix grinding out pars at some of the tougher holes on the course.

I am willing to look past the PGA Championship missed cut due to the difficulty of the course as well as the potential hangover from celebrating his return to the winner’s circle. Day noted in his presser that he hadn’t even practiced on the course. After some time off, we should expect Day to come back refreshed and ready to grind again.

Shane Lowry +6000 (FanDuel)

Shane Lowry. Unspectacular in most categories. Lowry put together a promising performance at the PGA Championship. His game off-the-tee was spectacular and for one we saw some putts roll in.

While all reports suggest Muirfield will be even more challenging, Firestone Country Club was a comp in prior season where Lowry won a WGC event. He has plenty of experience grinding in tougher fields and this 60/1 is very appetizing. I like his outright and will be looking for the best price on his top finisher positions for a possible T10 or T20 finish.

Eric Cole +20000 (DraftKings)

Finally, we throw a dart on Eric Cole at a high price. Cole has flashed form at several events this season — almost winning his first event as an older rookie on tour at the Honda Classic. Cole has a strong short game — both putting and around-the-green play.

In a stacked field, Cole is sitting at 17th in approach and has shown the ability to contend on the weekend. At the PGA Championship and Byron Nelson, Cole finished in the top 25 in two of the better recent fields. Do I think he is likely to win the event? Probably not. However, at 200/1 stranger things could happen. At these odds, he might make more sense as a top finisher bet or even a made cut bet but we will surely sprinkle a smidge on his outright.
