Happy Sunday, Grinders! We have a massive 13-game main slate today, and that is an absolutely huge docket for a Sunday. I have zero time to waste, so it’s a no-nonsense introduction today. It’s time to get to work.

We don’t necessarily have a lot of major concerns, but we do have quite a few “yellow” designations popping up with the MLB weather today. Keep a close eye on that as lineup lock nears, but I am going to write this article as though every game plays. Sundays are also a wild day with players sometimes getting a day off, so we also need to keep tabs on the MLB starting lineups as they roll in.

Let’s dig in and see what this Sunday has to offer!

Sunday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings

Wheeler of the Phillies

TOP TIER ACES

Zack Wheeler vs. Yankees
Paul Skenes vs. Diamondbacks
Brandon Woodruff vs. Marlins
Carlos Rodon vs. Phillies
Shane Baz vs. Reds

We have a solid group of aces available for the second straight day, with a couple of headliners at the top. As usual, let’s start with a look at the 2025 data:

Wheeler – 2.39 ERA, 2.56 xFIP, 33.4% K, 5.3% BB
Skenes – 1.91 ERA, 3.09 xFIP, 27.8% K, 6.3% BB
Woodruff – 1.65 ERA, 1.92 xFIP, 39.0% K, 0.0% BB (16 innings)
Rodon – 3.10 ERA, 3.69 xFIP, 27.5% K, 9.1% BB
Baz – 4.66 ERA, 3.94 xFIP, 23.1% K, 8.8% BB

Let me get the easy part out of the way. I struggled with where to put Shane Baz because his stats really don’t warrant him being in the ace tier. However, he’s priced at $9,500 on DK, so his salary really doesn’t place him in the secondary tier. He’s $9,100 on FD as well. Those salaries are just too expensive given the quality of pitchers that we have today. Baz has been much better recently, but that is factored into this elevated salary tags. The opposing Reds are playing good baseball right now, and Baz simply isn’t on my radar at over $9,000 on both sites.

I’m just going to discuss these pitchers in the reverse order that I have them listed. Carlos Rodon has solid strikeout numbers for the year, but he has not been nearly as strong of late. He has a 4.00 ERA in the month of July to go along with a 15/9 K/BB ratio in 17 innings this month. The Phillies are a strong offense, and we can afford to be picky. I would maybe keep Rodon in my pool if building 20+ lineups, but he’s nowhere near a core option.

Don’t put a ton of stock into the 2025 numbers for Brandon Woodruff, as he is obviously not going to maintain a 39% strikeout rate with 0 walks. He has made just 3 starts since returning from the injured list, and he has looked fantastic. The problem is that he has averaged just 70 pitches per start, and the Brewers are clearly taking it easy on the pitch counts for their starters at this stage. I just worry about the ceiling here. Woodruff is a strong, safe play, but he is not my favorite option.

That leaves us with the best of the bunch. We’ll start with Paul Skenes to continue the trend of discussing these pitchers in reverse. There is no denying his talent, but the strikeout rate has leveled off in the 28% range, the Pirates almost never score any runs when he pitches, and the team will continue to be cautious with his pitch count limitations given that the team is in last place. Skenes hasn’t even topped 90 pitches in any of his last 5 starts. That leads me to Wheeler. He has a higher strikeout rate than Skenes, he has no concerns about pitch count limits, and the matchup against the Yankees isn’t nearly as concerning with Aaron Judge hitting the injured list.

I am ranking this tier as Wheeler #1, Skenes #2, and Woodruff #3, and I feel pretty comfortable with that setup. Even if he is popular, I want to be overweight on Wheeler in GPP formats, and he is the clear starting point for cash game builds.
