MLB DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for Friday, August 9th
Who is your favorite pitcher for cash games?
CheeseIsGood: Jack Flaherty
ebeimfohr: Jack Flaherty
Alex Sonty: Jack Flaherty
TJ Zwarych: Jack Flaherty
Who is your favorite pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
CheeseIsGood: Martin Perez (DK) – On FD, it’s really just paying up for the obvious Jack Flaherty. I think his salary is high enough there that salary doesn’t get out of hand. On DK, I much prefer saving with a cheaper SP2. The primary choices are Aaron Civale and Martin Perez. I don’t love the skills for Perez, but he did look like the old Perez in his last start, and this is pretty much the best possible matchup in the league for a left-handed pitcher. The Marlins have 7 of the 9 projected batters with ISOs similar to mine, which is 0. While I never expect a strikeout surge from Perez, this lineup strikes out enough to think he can get up toward the strikeout-per-inning range.
ebeimfohr: Robbie Ray – I’m siding with Ray thanks to the savings from Flaherty. It never feels comfortable flag-planting a high-variance pitcher like Ray, but the combination of price, matchup, and strikeout upside is too good. The Tigers project for a monstrous K rate with their current lineup, and the home park in San Francisco can shield Ray from some of his susceptibility to the long ball.

Alex Sonty: Jack Flaherty – I love saving money at SP2 on Aaron Civale, Martin Perez, and Grant Holmes on DK, but we don’t need to do that on FD, and if we’re saving at SP2, we should have enough money to afford Flaherty in a good strikeout spot. His 27.3% K-BB rate is 2nd in MLB (min. 100 IP), while the Pirates are projected to throw four K rates over 25% into their lineup, including three of their first four hitters. He’s topped 96 pitches in 5 of his last 6 starts, including 99 in his recent Dodgers debut. Again, I love Civale, Perez, and Holmes, but if I’m saving there at SP2, I want to spend on Flaherty at SP1.
TJ Zwarych: Robbie Ray – While Jack Flaherty is my favorite from a raw points standpoint, the discount for Ray gives him the edge for me for the top overall pitcher. He has a ridiculous 35.6% strikeout rate on the season and is playing in one of the best pitcher-friendly parks in baseball. The Tigers projected lineup strikes out at a 22.5% clip against left-handed pitching. Although the lineup is very right-handed heavy, Ray has done a surprisingly good job at limiting hard contact to righties so far this season.
