MLB DFS Top Stacks: Monday, April 22nd
MLB DFS is complex. Most articles on MLB DFS picks are about the individual players most likely to succeed on any given day, but the MLB DFS picks most likely to succeed aren’t always the MLB DFS picks we should be most likely to play. In this article, we will look at the MLB DFS process over the MLB DFS picks. And we’re looking at teams over individual players, using the features of the RotoGrinders Top Stacks tool. We’ll still look at the player projections that are available in our MLB Lineup Optimizer, LineupHQ. However, we’ll be more focused on collective ownership, optimal scores, and matchups of full stacks within the context of game selection and leverage.
We have a 7-game main slate that gets started at 7:20 PM ET. A minimum-priced Albert Suarez is in play at pitcher, particularly on DraftKings where we need two pitchers. Dylan Cease may be considered a “DFS ace” due to his strikeout ability, but he is in Coors Field tonight, so it seems premium bats will be easily affordable.
Let’s figure out which offenses we are prioritizing.
MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks for Monday, April 22nd
Chalk Stack – Padres at Austin Gomber
The Padres head to Coors Field to kick off a 4-game series against the Rockies. They have been a top-10 offense overall to begin 2024, and their numbers against LHP have been even better. Their .208 ISO versus LHP this season ranks 2nd best in the league, and they have struck out just 18.8% of the time.
Left-hander Austin Gomber gets the start for the Rockies, and he owns a 5.10 SIERA and has allowed 1.7 HR/9 since the beginning of last season. His strikeout rate is well below average at 15.2%, and he has allowed loads of hard contact and barrels.
Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Ha-seong Kim have each posted an ISO above .220 since the start of last season. All three of them are elite options, with Machado and Kim feeling a bit underpriced.
Xander Bogaerts and Jurickson Profar are both more contact-driven than power hitters, but either makes a fine inclusion in stacks.
Youngsters Luis Campusano and Eguy Rosario have both posted excellent numbers against LHP in a small sample dating back to the start of last season.
The Rockies bullpen is again expected to be one of the worst in the league, and their early season results support that. The Colorado ‘pen owns a 4.26 SIERA (4th worst) and has struck out just 18.6% of hitters.
The Padres will certainly be popular, but given the guarantee of 9 innings of at-bats on the road against mediocre-at-best pitching, it may be worth finding other ways to differentiate your lineups.
