Pitcher Grind Down
- Josh Beckett – Beckett has pitched well this season with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and a K/9 of 8.6. He has a decent matchup against the Reds, but Great American Ballpark is one of the most HR-friendly ballparks in baseball and a single swing from a Reds’ hitter can turn a good start from an opposing pitcher to a bad start. I think there are better options in his price range. Rating = 5
Salaries: $7500 FD, $16410 DS, $15500 DD, $9300 DK, $89300 FF, $23500 SS, $13600 FTD
- Mike Leake – Leake owns a 3.29 ERA this season with a 1.11 WHIP and a K/9 of 6.1. He draws a tough matchup tonight against the Dodgers who are ranked 4th against RH pitching with a team .337 wOBA. He’s in play on multi-pitcher sites, but I don’t think he will be on very many of my rosters. Rating = 5
Salaries: $6900 FD, $13387 DS, $12850 DD, $7500 DK, $85400 FF, $20100 SS, $12300 FTD
Batter Grind Down
LA Dodgers
Adrian Gonzalez – Gonzalez got last night off and should be ready to go tonight against the RHP Leake that has given up a .323 wOBA to LHB’s this season. A-Gon has great power against RH pitching with a .389 wOBA.
Additional Plays: Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp
Cincinnati
Jay Bruce – Bruce has a pretty decent matchup against the RHP Beckett who has given up a .364 wOBA to LHB’s. Bruce is cheap across the industry and appears to be heating up. It’s a great time to buy low on him.
Additional Plays: Billy Hamilton

Pitcher Grind Down
- Marco Estrada – Estrada has struggled in his last 4 starts. He’s given up 16 earned runs while only striking out 18 batters. That said, a matchup against the Mets in Citi Field could be exactly what he needs to turn things around. The Mets are ranked 26th against RH pitching this season while striking out at a 21.0% clip. Rating = 6
Salaries: $7500 FD, $16897 DS, $15300 DD, $8200 DK, $93000 FF, $22300 SS, $13200 FTD
- Daisuke Matsuzaka – Dice-K will be making his 2nd start of the season. His first start looked a lot like his previous starts in the last few years. He gave up 4 earned runs and 5 walks in less than 5 innings of work. I’d like to see him post a quality start or two before targeting him in daily fantasy. Rating = 4
Salaries: $4200 FD, $11219 DS, $9750 DD, $6900 DK, $64600 FF, $13000 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Milwaukee
Jonathan Lucroy – Lucroy is quietly having another terrific season. He has a .377 wOBA against RH pitching and we all know how bad Dice-BB can be when his command is off.
Additional Plays: Jean Segura, Carlos Gomez
NY Mets
Daniel Murphy – I won’t be heavily targeting the Mets’ batters tonight, but Murphy makes a nice cash game play. He has a .335 wOBA against RH pitching this season.
Additional Plays: David Wright

Pitcher Grind Down
- Tom Koehler – Koehler had a terrific start to the season, but is slowly making his way back down to Earth. He has given up 13 earned runs over his last 3 starts and has only struck out more than 5 batters 1 time in his last 8 starts. Tonight he faces the Rangers in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. He can safely be avoided. Rating = 3
Salaries: $5800 FD, $12743 DS, $13600 DD, $6800 DK, $75500 FF, $16500 SS, $11900 FTD
- Colby Lewis – Lewis gets another start tonight and I will say the same thing that I have about him all season long: he should be avoided for daily fantasy purposes. On the season he has a 5.77 ERA with a 1.77 WHIP. He is facing a Marlins’ offense that is ranked 10th against RH pitching this season. Rating = 4
Salaries: $6600 FD, $11884 DS, $10750 DD, $6000 DK, $48800 FF, $13000 SS, $9700 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Miami
Giancarlo Stanton – Stanton doesn’t get to play in hitter’s parks very often so I’m going to take advantage while I can. Lewis has given up a .355 wOBA to RHB’s this season and Stanton has a .404 wOBA against RH pitching.
Additional Plays: Garrett Jones, Christian Yelich
Texas
Alex Rios – I mentioned this in yesterday’s column: Rios always seems to go under-owned despite having terrific speed and power. This season he has a .321 wOBA against RH pitching and Koehler has given up a .355 wOBA to RHB’s.
Additional Plays: Adrian Beltre, Shin-Soo Choo, Elvis Andrus

Pitcher Grind Down
- Justin Verlander – Verlander has looked disinterested on the mound over his last few starts. He just doesn’t seem to have that killer instinct that we see from him in the postseason. He’s a slight favorite tonight, but I’d like to see a quality start or two out of him before ponying up the cash and using him in my lineups. Rating = 6
Salaries: $7800 FD, $15924 DS, $14650 DD, $8700 DK, $70400 FF, $21400 SS, $15700 FTD
- John Danks – Danks has pitched well at home this season, but has been extremely inconsistent. Not only that, but he faces a Tigers’ offense that is ranked 11th against LH pitching with a team .330 wOBA. There are better options at his price point. Rating = 4
Salaries: $5700 FD, $12177 DS, $11650 DD, $7600 DK, $75700 FF, $17900 SS, $10500 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
Victor Martinez – Martinez has been good against RH pitching this season, but his numbers against southpaws have been off the charts. He has a .504 wOBA against LH pitching and draws a terrific matchup against Danks who has given up a .339 wOBA to RHB’s.
Additional Plays: Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler, Austin Jackson, Nick Castellanos
Chicago White Sox
Jose Abreu – I think we are past the point where you have to avoid all hitters against Justin Verlander. At least until he turns things around. Abreu has a .398 wOBA against RH pitching this season and has multi-HR upside.
Additional Plays: Adam Eaton

Pitcher Grind Down
- Corey Kluber – Kluber has pitched well of late and has lowered his ERA to 3.23 on the season. He also has a very respectable K/9 of 10.4. While the Royals strike out fewer than any team in baseball, they are ranked 25th against RH pitching. So he may see a few less strikeouts, but he should be able to keep their bats in check. Rating = 7
Salaries: $8700 FD, $20448 DS, $17000 DD, $10700 DK, $123500 FF, $28900 SS, $13600 FTD
- Jason Vargas – Vargas was scheduled to start last night against the Yankees, but that game was rained out and he will instead take the bump tonight. Vargas has a 3.28 ERA on the season with a K/9 of 6.6. While the Indians’ lineup is littered with LHB’s, Vargas has given up a .328 wOBA to lefties this season. He’s an average play at best. Rating = 5
Salaries: $6100 FD, $15017 DS, $10650 DD, $8200 DK, $79800 FF, $20700 SS, $11300 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
Lonnie Chisenhall – Fresh off of a 3-HR, 9 RBI performance last night, Chisenhall is a recommended play again tonight. Even though this is a lefty/lefty matchup, Chisenhall has been crushing LH pitching to a tune of a .540 wOBA this season.
Additional Plays: Carlos Santana, Michael Brantley
Kansas City
Alex Gordon – I’m not crazy about the Royals’ hitters tonight, but Gordon has a .375 wOBA against RH pitching this season and Kluber has always struggled against batters from the left side of the plate.
Additional Plays: Eric Hosmer
