MLB Parlay Piece for July 16, 2023

Houston Astros -1.5 (+115)

Heading into today’s series finale, the Houston Astros are five games better than the Los Angeles Angels in the season standings. In their last 10 games, the Astros are 6-4, compared to a 2-8 record for the slumping Angels. Tonight, Houston has the more talented starting pitcher and the better offense. Usage concerns are valid in Houston’s arm barn, but it should not scare away bettors in this situation – trust the road favorites to get the job done.

Shohei Ohtani 2+ Total Bases (-105)

Cristian Javier has been borderline dominant against right-handed batters this year, allowing only a .189 opponent batting average while striking out 30.6% of opposing hitters. However, he has had a much more difficult time with left-handed batters, against which Javier has a 5.08 FIP, 1.52 WHIP, and he has allowed a .296 opponent batting average. Playing at home this season, Shohei Ohtani has recorded multiple total bases in 57% of his games played. This is great value on one of the best hitters in all of baseball.

Chas McCormick 2+ Total Bases (+150)

Chas McCormick does not instill much fear into right-handed pitchers, but he certainly keeps southpaws awake at night the day before they have to face him. Entering play on Sunday, McCormick owns an impressive .308 batting average, .975 OPS, and a 169 wRC+ against left-handed pitching in 2023. Tyler Anderson has struggled mightily against right-handed batters to the tune of a 4.87 FIP and a 1.57 WHIP while allowing a .295 opponent batting average. At significant plus-money, McCormick is a worthwhile inclusion in this longshot parlay.
