New Orleans Saints -4

The Saints have had one of the most volatile seasons of any team in the NFL to this point. After slaughtering the Green Bay Packers 38 to 3 in Week 1, New Orleans was slaughtered themselves by the Carolina Panthers in Week 2. The Saints rebounded in Week 3 for a dominant win against the New England Patriots, but blew an 11 point fourth quarter lead to the New York Giants at home in Week 4. In Week 5, the Saints easily handled the Washington Football Team before heading into their bye week.

Part of the volatility is a result of having Jameis Winston under center this year. Winston has the eighth best QBR in the NFL amongst qualified signal callers, but he also has three games this season with less than 150 passing yards. He has two games with four or more passing touchdowns, but also two games with one touchdown pass or fewer. It does not help that this unit has seen inconsistent production from their offensive line. Yet, on Monday Night Football, New Orleans has an extremely favorable matchup against a weak Seattle defense. Winston and Kamara could be in for a strong day at the office, especially after coming off of a bye week.

Entering play tonight, the Saints have the best rush defense in the league, allowing only 3.3 yards-per-carry. Cameron Jordan and Shy Tuttle have been elite on the defensive line. In the secondary, Marshon Lattimore has been arguably the best cornerback in the NFL so far this fall. Marcus Williams has been a standout at safety. Even without solid production from Malcolm Jenkins and Paulson Adebo, New Orleans has held opposing quarterbacks to the second-lowest passer rating of any team in football this year. Expect another strong day from this defense against Seattle’s backup quarterback and running back tandem.

Seattle Seahawks +4

Geno Smith and Alex Collins have performed admirably in relief of Russell Wilson and Chris Carson each of the last few weeks. However, they will run into their toughest test, by far, tonight when they take on a ferocious New Orleans defense that had an extra week to prepare for this game thanks to having their bye week. Since taking over for the injured Wilson, Smith has only a 34.9 QBR and only threw for 209 yards in last week’s overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The offensive line is poor in both run and pass protection, making it unlikely that either Smith or Collins will be able to have a tremendous showing tonight.

Defensively, Seattle is one of the worst run defenses in football, allowing 4.4 yards-per-carry. In the secondary, Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams, and Sidney Jones have not been able to stop anyone so far this fall. Opposing quarterbacks have thrown for 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions against the Seahawks in 2021—good for a 102.1 passer rating. Seattle is going to find it difficult to contain Winston and Kamara this evening.

Pick and Prediction

This line opened with the Saints being only a field goal favorite, but the consensus line now has New Orleans favored by 4.5 points. This sharp action is worth tailing, even after missing opening value. Winston and Kamara should both have solid performances tonight against a weak Seattle defense. Coming off of a bye week, the Saints defense should be able to make life extremely difficult for the Seattle offense. Bet on the more talented, healthier, and more prepared team to secure a comfortable victory tonight.

PICK: Saints -4 (-110)
