NBA Grind Down: Thursday, May 19th
Welcome to the RotoGrinders NBA Grind Down. In this all-encompassing preview of today’s NBA action, every game will be broken down statistically, with several key elements highlighted in our charts.
Vegas lines are broken down to show projected team totals, to give you an idea of who is favored to win, and often more importantly, how many points they’re expected to score. We also provide pace numbers, so you can spot a game that might have a few extra possessions and more opportunities for fantasy points.
We also provide position-by-position matchup rankings for every team, to give you an idea of the players who will be in better situations to succeed. Using Defense versus Position data, every projected starter is listed along with his opponent’s rank in points allowed to players of his position. These color-coded charts will help you spot the best matchups of the night at a glance.
Every game is also broken down by our NBA experts, providing an overview of the game and a selection of players to consider from each contest.

Toronto Raptors
Record: 56-26 — Road: 24-17 — Last 10: 7-3
- Toronto Raptors Offense
Points Scored Per Game: 102.7 (13 of 30)
Implied Team Total: 93.3 (4 of 4)
The Raptors were demolished in Game 1 against the Cavaliers. Hopefully, they will be able to bounce back in Game 2, or this could be a very short series. We have seen teams come back after getting blown out in Game 1 time and time again (OKC vs. San Antonio, Portland vs. Golden State), so I’ll trust the Vegas line heading into Game 2. The Raptors are listed as 12.5-point underdogs with by far the lowest team total on the board. I have a difficult time listing any of their players as elite fantasy options, but there are some viable secondary plays here. Jonas Valanciunas has been ruled out of Game 2, which means Bismack Biyombo will draw another start at center.

Lowry really struggled in Game 1, mustering up only 16 fantasy points in 32 minutes of action. While I expect a much better outing from the Raptors’ point guard in Game 2, he is still a secondary play at best. With Russell Westbrook and Stephen Curry in such great spots, I will not be looking to Lowry in cash games. The one plus for Lowry is that the Cavaliers were ranked 17th in fantasy points allowed to point guards this season.

Biyombo actually had a decent outing in Game 1. He didn’t play a full complement of minutes thanks to the blowout, but he still managed to score 19 fantasy points. With Jonas Valanciunas out for Game 2, Biyombo should continue to see all of the minutes that he can handle down low. Steven Adams is the safer play of the two, but Biyombo is an interesting pivot in tournaments.

If Jonas Valanciunas is out again and if the Raptors can keep the game within striking distance, Patterson could see upwards of 40 minutes in Game 2. He actually played pretty well in Game 1, finishing with eight points, two rebounds, and four assists in only 28 minutes of action. Patterson is a viable punt play at power forward in both cash games and tournaments.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Record: 57-25 — Home: 33-8 — Last 10: 6-4
- Cleveland Cavaliers Offense
Points Scored Per Game: 104.3 (8 of 30)
Implied Team Total: 105.3 (3 of 4)
The Cavaliers showed no rust in the first game of the series, beating the Raptors by 31 points. If Game 1 was any indication of how the rest of the series is going to go, it’s not going to be pretty. With limited options in these two game slate, my ultimate goal is to get as much exposure to the Warriors/Thunder series as possible, picking my spots with the Cavaliers and Raptors. Cleveland is listed as an 12.5-point favorite with an implied team total of 105.3 points. The main issue here isn’t the matchup, it’s the potential blowout. The Warriors/Thunder Game 3 is expected to be close and high-scoring, so we should get as much exposure to that game as possible.

James was well on his way to another 50 fantasy point outing in Game 1, but the Cavaliers pulled him early once they got up by 30. James still finished with 39 fantasy points in only 28 minutes of action. We should still be concerned about a potential blowout in Game 2, but James has 40+ minute upside if Toronto is able to keep the game within striking distance.

Love was a bit of a disappointment in Game 1, finishing with only 23 fantasy points. At his price point, he fell way short of salary expectations. We can’t let one game cloud our judgment though, as Love is still averaging over 35 fantasy points per game in the postseason. I still like him slightly more then Draymond Green in a points per dollar sense, but it may not be the worst idea to punt the power forward position with Serge Ibaka and Patrick Patterson.

Irving outplayed Lowry on both ends of the floor in Game 1. He put up 43 fantasy points in only 30 minutes of action. I love his price of $7,100 on FanDuel, but if you roster Irving, that means that you are going to have to fade either Russell Westbrook or Stephen Curry. Given the other options at his position, Irving is more of a GPP play for me.

Smith is one of the best values at shooting guard. The only concern is his decreased usage rate in the postseason. With the big three in Cleveland taking more shots, there haven’t been as many to go around for the role players. Smith still offers nice upside for his price though, and the savings at the position will allow you to spend up at point guard and/or small forward.

Thompson didn’t have a great first quarter, but he finished Game 1 with 14 fantasy points in 28 minutes of action. He should average 30+ minutes per game in this series and we know the type of upside that he provides when he sees big minutes. It will be interesting to see what his ownership will be, as Steven Adams and Serge Ibaka were both letdowns in Game 2 of that series.

The Warriors came out and did exactly what they needed to – they stomped the Thunders at home in Game 2. They now head to Oklahoma City with the series tied at a game a piece. Both teams have to feel pretty good about the spot they are in. The Warriors only need to win one of the three games in Oklahoma City to steal back homecourt advantage. Despite being on the road, the Warriors are 2.5-point favorites in Game 3. Once again, they have the highest team total on the board.

Curry has yet to have a huge game in this series, but it is coming. He has played well, he just hasn’t taken over offensively. He draws the best matchup of the five starters and the Warriors’ may have to lean on him a bit more now that the series shifts to Oklahoma City. There are enough value plays in the slate that we can easily fit both Curry and Westbrook in the same lineup.

Barnes has played well in the first two games of the series, scoring 20 and 23 fantasy points. Of the three value small forwards (Barnes, Iguodala, Carroll), he has the highest floor, which makes him the best cash game target. He should see 32-35 minutes in Game 3 and hopefully he can keep his 20+ fantasy point streak alive.

Green remains an elite tournament play. He has been an easy fade in cash games thanks to his price, but his ownership is very low. We all know the type of upside that he provides and the Warriors are going to need him to show up in a big way on the road. So far in the playoffs, Green has averaged 44.7 fantasy points in over 37 minutes per contest.

Iguodala has rewarded fantasy owners in the first two games of the series, scoring 23 and 25 fantasy points. He is playing a big role in this series, as the Warriors need his length to defend Kevin Durant. I slightly prefer Barnes in cash games, but Iguodala has more upside. There isn’t much separation between the two in terms of fantasy appeal.
Oklahoma City Thunder

- Oklahoma City Thunder Offense
Points Scored Per Game: 110.2 (2 of 30)

The Thunder may have gotten blown out by the Warriors in Game 2, but they have to feel good about heading home with the series all tied. They can now move on to the NBA Finals if they can protect their home floor. That will be a tall task though, as they are taking on the defending champions. The Thunder are listed as 2.5-point underdogs in what should be a terrific Game 3. There should be a ton of fantasy points to go around in this one and I highly recommend getting as much exposure to this game as possible.

Ibaka was one of the many Thunder players that struggled in Game 2 against the Warriors. Don’t be discouraged though, as he is going to have a major role in this series. The Thunder are committed to playing big, even when the Warriors go small. Ibaka is cheap enough that he should be considered an elite play in all league formats.

Waiters is seeing big minutes in this series. He has played at least 29 fantasy points in each of the first two games, scoring at least 15 fantasy points in each. The Thunder need his scoring on the floor and he has actually played some decent defense as well. He is my favorite value at shooting guard.
