NBA Grind Down: Tuesday, May 24th
Welcome to the RotoGrinders NBA Grind Down. In this all-encompassing preview of today’s NBA action, every game will be broken down statistically, with several key elements highlighted in our charts.
Vegas lines are broken down to show projected team totals, to give you an idea of who is favored to win, and often more importantly, how many points they’re expected to score. We also provide pace numbers, so you can spot a game that might have a few extra possessions and more opportunities for fantasy points.
We also provide position-by-position matchup rankings for every team, to give you an idea of the players who will be in better situations to succeed. Using Defense versus Position data, every projected starter is listed along with his opponent’s rank in points allowed to players of his position. These color-coded charts will help you spot the best matchups of the night at a glance.
Every game is also broken down by our NBA experts, providing an overview of the game and a selection of players to consider from each contest.

Golden State Warriors
Series Record: 1-2
- Golden State Warriors Offense
Points Scored Per Game: 114.9 (1 of 30)
Implied Team Total: 111.8 (1 of 4)
For the first time since the NBA Finals last year when they were down two games to one, the Warriors’ backs are against the wall. If they are unable to pick up a win in Game 4, the Warriors would need to win three straight to make it back to the finals. Even though they were thoroughly outplayed on both ends of the floor in Game 3, we should expect a much better outing in what appears to be a must-win Game 4. There was a lot of buzz surrounding a potential suspension for Draymond Green, but the NBA will not suspend him for tonight’s game. With Green in the lineup, the Warriors are listed as 1.5-point favorites with an implied team total of 111.8 points.

Curry has not played very well so far in this series. He is only averaging 39.6 fantasy points in 33 minutes per contest. Curry’s usage has also been down during this series, but I expect Steve Kerr to find a way to get his MVP some more open looks in Game 4. The Warriors will likely treat this as a must-win. Look for Curry to play 38-40 minutes and have his best game of the series.

The Warriors have needed Iguodala’s defense in this series, but so far he has been producing more than Harrison Barnes offensively. In the first three games, Iguodala is averaging 23.3 fantasy points in 27.5 minutes per contest. It has been tough predicting which Warriors’ small forward will have the better fantasy outing each night, but I’ll give a slight edge to Iguodala in Game 4.

Green may have had his worst game of the season. In the 32 minutes while he was on the floor, the Warriors were outscored by 43 points. He had the worst +/- of any player in any playoff game since the NBA started keeping track of the stat in 1997 (stat courtesy of ESPN and RG Member Yeoman). He is an easy fade for cash games, but his ownership should be at it’s lowest point of the series. The one thing that we have learned about Green is that we should never count him out. Feel free to target him in GPPs.

After a nice outing in Game 1, the Thunder have done a great job of defending Thompson in the last two games. Even though Thompson hasn’t shot the ball well from the floor, he is a scorer that is eventually going to get some shots to fall. He is a borderline elite play on FanDuel where you have to roster two shooting guards. On DraftKings, it makes sense to save salary cap space with J.R. Smith or Dion Waiters.

Barnes had an awful outing in Game 3. He couldn’t seem to hit a shot and he failed to deliver any peripheral statistics other than two rebounds. Thanks to recency bias, his ownership should be low for Game 4. He is still a borderline elite play in my eyes, as he should see 30+ minutes of action in an uptempo game.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Series Record: 2-1
- Oklahoma City Thunder Offense
Points Scored Per Game: 110.2 (2 of 30)
Implied Team Total: 110.3 (2 of 4)
Before the start of Game 3, the Thunder’s odds to win the series were basically three to one. After a dominating performance, the Thunder can now take a commanding 3-1 lead over the defending champion Warriors. The Thunder are listed as 1.5-point favorites in what should a more competitive game than the previous two. The potential fantasy production has yet to be fully reached in this series thanks to two blowouts. That shouldn’t be an issue in Game 4, as the game is expected to stay close and the total for the game is set at 222 points.

Westbrook has outplayed this season’s MVP so far. In the first three games of the series, he is averaging 52.3 fantasy points in 34.4 minutes per game. The best part is that the last two games have been blowouts, which have limited his minutes. Assuming this game stays close, Westbrook could see upwards of 40 minutes. He remains the top overall play at any position.

Durant hasn’t been as productive as Westbrook in this series, but he is still averaging 42.3 fantasy points in just under 38 minutes per contest. Durant is coming off of an impressive 51 fantasy point outing in Game 3. He has just as much upside as LeBron James and now that the Eastern Conference series is back in Cleveland, he may be the better play of the two. The blowout potential in the Cavaliers’ game is a lot higher than it is in this game.

Adams has played well in this series, but it hasn’t come without a price. He hurt his thumb, he hurt his back, and he has been hit in the nether region not once, but twice by Draymond Green. He got into foul trouble in Game 3, which limited his fantasy production, but he is still averaging 23.7 fantasy points per game in this series. With Jonas Valanciunas potentially returning for Toronto in Game 5, I slightly prefer Adams over Bismack Biyombo in cash games.

Ibaka has been productive so far in this series, averaging 25.3 fantasy points per contest. His price has come up a bit on DraftKings, but he is still an elite play on both of the main fantasy sites. He should see around 35 minutes in Game 4 against the Warriors. At his price, he is a tough fade on FanDuel ($5,000).

Waiters has been the best value play at shooting guard for the better part of a couple of weeks. He has seen a major increase in minutes in this series and there is no reason to think that changes in Game 4. His price is still affordable across the industry and he has benefitted from an uptempo series against the Warriors.

The Raptors got off to a hot start in Game 4 and then weathered the storm in the second half to even the series at two games a piece. It’s crazy how much the media overreacts after each game of the series, as only two games ago, they were saying that the Raptors had no chance in the series. I still like the Cavaliers to win this in six games, but at least we have a series now. The Raptors head to Cleveland for an all-important Game 5. They are listed as 10.5-point underdogs with by far the lowest team total on the board at only 94.5 points. It sounds like Jonas Valanciunas will be active for this game, but he didn’t play a single minute in Game 4. Even if he does play, he will likely see limited minutes.

Lowry and DeRozan combined for 77 points in Game 4, which was the most that they have ever scored in a single game together. They carried their team to a victory on the strength of some great shooting. It’s hard to imagine them shooting the ball that well in Cleveland though, especially if the Cavaliers make adjustments defensively. I still like Lowry as a GPP play, but am leaning to Westbrook, Curry, and Irving in cash games.

DeRozan backed up his 44 fantasy point outing in Game 3 with a 40 fantasy point outing in Game 4. While that’s certainly impressive, he only averaged 26 fantasy points per game in Cleveland in the first two games of the series. DeRozan is a borderline elite play on DraftKings at a price of $7,300, but he is more of a GPP play on FanDuel. If we take price out of consideration, I slightly prefer Thompson over DeRozan.

Did anyone else pivot off of Biyombo after the Raptors announced that Jonas Valanciunas was going to play? That was a little frustrating, as big Val didn’t see a single minute and Biyombo came through with a respectable 28 fantasy point outing. With Val’s status up in the air again for Game 5, I will list Biyombo as a secondary play. It also doesn’t help that the series is shifting back to Cleveland, where he only averaged 16 fantasy points in the first two games of the series.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Series Record: 2-2
- Cleveland Cavaliers Offense

The Cavaliers didn’t look great in the two games in Toronto. While I am and never will be an NBA coach, I couldn’t quite figure out why Kevin Love did not see the floor in the fourth quarter. I know that Cleveland went on a nice run in the first half of the quarter, but Love should have been out there down the stretch. The last thing Cleveland needs right now is internal drama between the coach and the players. Anyway, all will be right with the world if and when the Cavaliers take care of business at home in Game 5. They are 10.5-point favorites with an implied team total of 105 points.

James may be the safest play on the board in terms of his floor (Westbrook is in the mix as well). He has basically been a lock for 40+ fantasy points, regardless of how each game has played out. With the series tied at two games a piece, James may put the team on his back in Game 5. The only concern here is that the Cavaliers are double-digit favorites and we saw what happened to his playing time in the first two games of the series (28 and 34 minutes).

Irving struggled in Game 3, but has otherwise been terrific in this series. In the other three games, he has scored 43, 34, and 37 fantasy points, respectively. If you want to fade Westbrook or Curry, Irving is a great pivot in both cash games and tournaments. Love hasn’t played well at all in this series. He hasn’t shot the ball well, he hasn’t rebounded the ball well, and he just looks lost on the floor. He was outplayed by Channing Frye in Game 4 and didn’t leave the bench in the fourth quarter. At this point, Love is more of a GPP play. Smith scored 30 fantasy points in Game 3, but has scored 16 fantasy points or fewer in each of the other three games in this series. Thompson has rebounded the ball well in this series, but the Raptors have done a great job at limiting him down low. Thompson usually gets a few easy buckets per game on either put-backs or dump-offs from James or Irving, but that hasn’t been the case in this series. Heading into Game 5, I see him as a secondary play on FanDuel (center) and DraftKings (power forward).
